 Research & Publications

This section of the Web site is a researcher’s dream. It provides a wide array of information about counties and what they do.

There are 3,068 counties in the United States, and all play a vital role in the intergovernmental structure delivering a variety of programs and services to Americans. Information in this section includes data and demographics, sample ordinances and model county programs. NACo has gathered this information through surveys, studies and from the counties themselves. It also includes information from other sources.

In many instances, NACo has taken information and produced publications on topical issues and county programs.  Those publications can be found in this section as well.

The vast amount of information in this section can help lead to a better understanding of the critical role that counties have in serving America. But if you have questions or can’t find the information you need, contact NACo’s Research Division.
