Marquee games highlight UNT schedule
Johnny Jones has known for a while now that he is going to get a chance to go home this season. The date became firm on Wednesday when the North Texas men’s basketball team released its 2010-11 schedule. UNT will face LSU, where Jones was a player and assistant coach, on Dec. 22. That early Christmas present for UNT’s head coach was part of what Jones described as yet another tough schedule, one that is highlighted by a series of marquee games.

Football: Running wild

DRC/David Minton
North Texas running back Lance Dunbar (5) tries to break away from a tackler in a game against Lousiana-Monroe last season. Dunbar is one of many talented rushers returning to Sun Belt Conference teams for the 2010 season.

Arkansas State defensive lineman Bryan Hall faced Nebraska’s Roy Helu Jr. and Adam Robinson, who set Iowa’s freshman rushing record during the 2009 season, in the last year alone. And that doesn’t even count Alabama’s Mark Ingram, who Hall had to try to haul down in 2008. Needless to say, the senior knows what a good running back looks like.  And he sees a batch coming this year in the Sun Belt Conference that stacks up well when compared to the rest of the leagues in the country.

Football: Looking to rebound

Associated Press
North Texas linebacker Craig Robertson, right, attempts to tackle Louisiana-Lafayette’s Undrea Sails during an October 2009 game in Lafayette, La. Robertson is one of four UNT players on the preseason all-Sun Belt Conference team this season.

North Texas head coach Todd Dodge knew what was coming Monday during the opening session of the Sun Belt Conference’s preseason teleconference. After five straight seasons with no more than three wins, UNT is going to have to prove that it has the ability to work its way out of the basement of the Sun Belt standings, which is exactly where the Mean Green was picked to finish in the preseason coaches’ poll. UNT was voted eighth, ahead of only Western Kentucky, which fired head coach David Elson during an 0-12 season in 2009.

Craig Robertson had to wait a while, but the North Texas senior linebacker finally got his due Monday on the first day of the Sun Belt Conference’s preseason teleconference. Robertson is entering his fourth season as a starter and was named honorable mention All-Sun Belt twice. That was the highest honor Robertson had received until he was one of four UNT players to be named to the 2010 preseason all-conference team. Running back Lance Dunbar, offensive lineman Esteban Santiago and defensive end Brandon Akpunku were also all-league picks.
