Anthony Weiner Erupts at Republicans for Rejecting 9/11 Responders Health Bill

Most House Republicans on Thursday voted against a bill to provide $7.4 billion in aid to 9/11 first responders who became sick after the attacks. They complained that Democrats opted to bypass voting on amendments, opting instead for a process that sped up the vote but required a two-thirds majority.

Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner blew a fuse on the House floor when he heard his GOP colleagues complaining about procedure yesterday. In a dramatic one-and-a-half minute speech, Weiner hollered that Republicans were being cowardly by opposing the bill based on procedure.

The measure failed to get the two-thirds needed to pass: The vote was 255 to 159, and came down largely along party lines.

"It's Republicans wrapping their arms around Republicans rather than doing the right thing on behalf of the heroes," Weiner yelled. "It is a shame. A shame! If you believe this is a bad idea to provide health care - then vote no! But don't give me the cowardly view that 'Oh if it was a different procedure'..."

Before Weiner made his remarks on the floor, Republican Rep. Peter King of New York accused Democrats of being too afraid to vote on controversial amendments and instead staging a "charade" by holding the vote.

Weiner contended that Republicans were the ones staging a charade by stalling votes under the false pretense that they could possibly support a bill if it were further amended.

"We see it in the United States Senate every single day, where members say, 'We want amendments, we want debate, we want amendments -- but we're still a No,'" Weiner yelled. "You vote yes if you believe yes... if you believe it's the right thing. If you believe it's the wrong thing, you vote no."

Actually, Bin-Laden and his thugs should be paying for these particular health care costs. We can't catch him - so that's out.
Congress has decided to try and help this group of people injured for life on 9/11 at the WTC. No entitlements - the bill pays for it by dropping the tax breaks for off-shore corporations operating ON-SHORE, but with off-shore addresses. No tax increase - just pay what you've not been paying. The rest of us have been paying - they have not. I'm good with that - it's about time that got cheating got stopped anyway.

So, the bill has funding - it's paid for.

Next Republican objection: There might be an illegal somewhere in the group - so NO. Are there illegals on this 9 year old list? Have the republicans found some? Then say so - rat them out to us - prove it. I mean, there could be MARTIANS on the list as well - so NO.

Next Republican objection: Procedures, they don't like the democrats using the same procedures they themselves have used for two centuries. So NO.

Bottom line - the republicans simply don't like anything - except themselves. I can justify that statement by pointing at their votes on this issue alone.
These are September 11, 2001 World Trade Center injured people. If you don't care to help them - you will never help anybody.

The democrats need to keep putting this up for votes until it passes. To hell with these self-serving vampires.

amazing how stupid this guy thinks we are. the dumocrats have a solid majority in the house and the senate. they don't need the republicans for anything, except to blame when to many of their own don't vote the party line.

But the Republicans ALWAYS toe the party line, even if their position is wrong for the country. They put party over country, which is the point that this decent man was making. You don't play politics with the lives of the first responders from 9-11. Shame on you!

It is amazing how stupid you are if you dont understand how the house and the senate work. You have to have a majority vote of 60%.

ALL MEMBERS OF THE CONGRESS AND SENATE NEED TO BE REMINDED THAT WHEN THEY VOTE ON "ANY" BILL THHAT THEY ARE NO LONGER DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS, BUT ARE UNITED STATES CONGRESSMEN AND SENATORS.

TO ME, THIS MEANS YOU ARE TO VOTE THE CONSCIENCES OF THE PEOPLE YOU REPRESENT.

IF THE REPUBLICANS VOTED "NO" ON THIS BILL PURELY BECAUSE IT'S A DEMOCRATIC BILL OR ARE USING THE EXCUSE YOU DID NOT LIKE THE WAY THE BILL WAS PRESENTED, YOU SHOULD RESIGN.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EVERYBODY IN THE UNITED STATES OWES THOSE WHO RESPONDED ON 9/11.

TO VOTE "NO" ON THIS BILL IS TO DISRESPECT ALL THE FIREFIGHTERS AND OTHERS WHO RESPONDED TO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER BOTH DURING AND AFTER THE COLLAPSE.

REPUBLICANS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE "COST" OF THIS BILL.

NO AMOUNT OF MONEY IS "TOO MUCH" TO MAKE UP FOR THE LIVES LOST AND PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL DAMAGE DONE TO THEM AT GROUND ZERO.

IF YOU ARE A REPUBLICAN AND YOU VOTED "NO" ON THIS BILL, YOU SHOULD RESIGN, BECAUSE YOU DO NOT DESERVE TO BE CONSIDERED A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES.!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been saying for years that The Democrats are like a rape-vicitum by the GOP. Instead of the Democrats defending and compromising, they should fight. I will say it again. Democrats that beg and plead for Republicans' help sends the messages that they are weak in governing as a party. I run my household, my budget, my accountibilty. The Democrats needs to learn to be strong leaders. The GOP will never compromise or help.

These people wer fireman police men and others. All with insurance and retirement plans. I am sorry they got sick, that is what healthcare is for. Sue the muslims for pain and suffering, take away the money for the mosque. It is not a tax payer issue. The tax ans spend dems are out for votes and continue to spend us into oblivion.

You should sue the board of education. They failed miserably with you. Are you an American dadirt? You don't seem to speak or write English very well. I want to see your papers. I don't think you're here legally. You obviously do not speak the English language. Show us your birth certificate.

Hate to point this out, but not all responders have insurance and retirement plans. FF and EMT's came from all over the country. I am a volunteer FF/EMT in a small town in Alaska, sure we have workers comp(not always easy to deal with), but thats it. No retirement, no insurance, no pay. Sure, we do it bc we love it, we love helping people, but we also don't expect to be hung out to dry by the very people who demand our services (taxpayers/politicians).

Wonderful to see passion in Congress. Maybe he woke some of the dead bodies that have been filling Republican chairs there for so long.

It's disgusting how these (mainly) Republicans are treating these heroes after using them for political posturing after 9-11.
