No rest for the winning, Sounders FC off to El Salvador NEW - 8/01, 10:59 AM

Sometimes you have to create your own luck.

Within seconds of taking the field as a second-half substitute, Sounders FC forward Fredy Montero launched an audacious shot from 35 yards out. The hopeful effort in the 60th minute was subsequently bobbled by Isidro Metapan goalkeeper Misael Alfaro and trickled over the goal line for the go-ahead score.

The fortuitous bounce would be all Seattle needed in a 1-0 win, despite dominating the El Salvadoran visitors in the run of play of a CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) match Wednesday night in front of 17,228 Qwest Field fans.

The second leg in the two-game preliminary round is 7 p.m. Tuesday in San Salvador and the winner will be determined by total goals scored, with away goals as the tiebreaker. Before that, Seattle travels to San Jose for an MLS match at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid was disappointed his team didn't earn a bigger advantage going into the second leg after outshooting Metapan 15-2, but said it was most important not to allow a crucial away-goal.

"We have the lead," Schmid said. "It forces them, when we go down there, that they need to score a goal. They can't sit back. Here they could try to sit back a little bit."

In the franchise's first appearance in an international tournament, Sounders FC improved its unbeaten streak to five games in all competitions (MLS, U.S. Open Cup, CCL).

Wearing "Electricity" yellow kits, Seattle controlled the game from start to finish, but couldn't find its goal-scoring form in the first half despite outshooting the visitors 7-0. Using a lineup mixed half and half with starters and reserves, Sounders FC's dominance continued in the second half, but only Montero's strike — his seventh goal of the year — would find the back of the net.

Through a translator, Montero said the goal "definitely represents a lot. It's part of the team's history. I scored the first goal in MLS and now the first international goal."

According to Metapan coach Edwin Portillo, Alfaro was crying in the visiting locker room for allowing the soft goal. Portillo said his team admittedly played defensively to try to keep it a low-scoring game, but won't have that luxury Tuesday in the second leg.

"We'll have to change the tactics," Portillo said. "We probably have, I suppose, to score two goals. ... We'll have to take risks."

• The preliminary-round winner between Seattle and Metapan (the winner of four league titles in seven years) advances to the group stage, joining Mexican club Monterrey, Saprissa of Costa Rica and either Tauro of Panama or Marathon of Honduras.

• Midfielder Peter Vagenas left the field in the 10th minute after apparently aggravating a right quadriceps injury and was replaced by Osvaldo Alonso.

• The A-League champion Sounders in 1996 also participated in CCL, finishing fourth in the final group-stage.

• MLS teams are now 2-1-0 hosting CCL play-in games. On Wednesday, Toronto FC beat Motagua of Honduras 1-0 and the Puerto Rico Islanders beat Los Angeles 4-1.

• The winner of the CCL advances to the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.
