Maelstrom

You pilot your ship through the dreaded "Maelstrom" asteroid belt -- suddenly your best friend thrusts towards you and fires, directly at your cockpit. You raise your shields just in time, and the battle is joined.

The deadliest stretch of space known to mankind has just gotten deadlier. Everywhere massive asteroids jostle for a chance to crush your ship, and deadly shinobi fighter patrols pursue you across the asteroid belt. But the deadliest of them all is your sister ship, assigned to you on patrol. The pilot, trained by your own Navy, battle hardened by months in the Maelstrom, is equipped with a twin of your own ship and intimate knowledge of your tactics.

The lovely Stratocaster R&R facility never sounded so good, but as you fire full thrusters to dodge the latest barrage you begin to think you'll never get home...

More about Maelstrom

Maelstrom is a clone of Astreroids created in 1993 by Andew Welch, founder of Ambrosia Software.

In the game you control a space ship and have to destroy asteroids by shooting them. Each level (or "wave" as it is called in the game) is limited to one screen, which loops around on the edges, so if you fly off the right side of the screen, you will reappear on the left side. The controls are simple, left and right arrows turn your ship and the up arrow provides thrust, you shoot with space and can use a shield with limited charge using the control button.

When a player shoots an asteroid it will split into several medium sized asteroids, who in turn when shot at will split into small asteroids, these small asteroids will explode and dissapear when shot. In addition to splitting up, the asteroids will also scatter in different directions when shot. In addition to the asteroids a number of special events can take place, these can be power-ups, point bonuses or multipliers, friendly ships in distress (which will turn into an extra life if you save them) enemy space ships who will shoot at you and so on.

Recently the game was released as open source and is now maintained by Sam Lantinga who provides versions for Mac, Windows, Linux, and BeOS.
