Civet is raised easily, less disease. Raising civet achieves high economic efficiency. Small Indian civet (Viverricula indica) is wildlife under Appendix III of Cites. 

Civet is small animal, weigh from 2 to 5 kg. Its body is slim, length from 54 to 63 cm. It has sandy-gray with dark dot. There are blackish or brown patches in parallel horizontal lines along the back from the shoulder to the buttock.  The tail length from 30 to 43 cm, with 7 dark brown or black rings.

Civet has the long head, pointed snout, 36 to 40 tooth and short legs with 5 toes.

The male civet has the musk-gland between the anus and the testicles. The musk is a value medicine. The musk is powerful fragrance, with the piquancy, warm. It makes antidotal, anti-inflame, pain reduction, etc. 

the civet meat is soft, fragrant, delicious. The civet meat, skin and bone are used as a medicine to traditional medicine. 

Civet distributed mainly in India, China, Southeast Asia. In Viet Nam, civet lives in almost provinces in the mountainous areas and midlands. 

In nature, civet lives alone in milpas, along streams, forestal bush, edge hills. The reproductive season of civet is April, May and June. Each year civet gives birth 1 brood of 3 to 5 young’s, in small cave or foot of tree. Civet's lifetime is about 8 - 9 years. 




Raising civet 

Coop:

Coop should be directed toward Southeast, high, dry, tile-roof, airy, ensuring warm in winter, and cool in summer. 

Coop can be divided into 2 or 3 floors. Each floors high from 70 to 80 cm. Each concrete floor slopes about 5 or 6 degrees for drainage. Place the trellis or bamboo cages in floors. Cage dimensions: L x W x H = 2 m x 1 m x 0.5 m. Cages have 4 or 6 legs with 0.2m high.

The bottoms of cage are firm net of stilly or bamboo, wooden bars. The bars are apart each other from 7 to 10 cm to the civet's feces fall easily. The cages are fasten the door, to avoid the escape of civets.

The crop and select breeding: 

Select the civet weight from 1.0 to 1.5 kg / each; healthy, agile, without injury, smooth hair. 

Usually, the beginning for new crop is in February or March. 

Civets get rapidly growth; they can reach 0.7 to 1.0 kg / each/ month. 

Harvest and sold in June to August, when the civets get weight of 4 to 6 kg/each. 


Care, feeding: 

In nature, civet activities and get food mainly at night. When raising in cage, should feeding the main for the dinner and breakfast is extra. Foods of civet are insects, lizards rodents, mice, nestling, small birds, snakes, birds' eggs, tree roots and often fruits. 


To tame wild civet, should feed by new food step by step, patiently.

To taming civet, let them are hungry in 1 or 2 day. Then feed them by the peeled ripe bananas (1 - 2 fruits/ 1 meal) mixed with sweet porridge. After 2 or 3 day, mill banana with sweet porridge for next 1 - 2 days. At last, feed civet by sweet porridge before, fruits supplement later. 

Continue to feed civet by sweet porridge with sub-products of pork, dog, cat, fish, or concentrate poultry feed. Can add multi-vitamin for more growth.

According to Viet Linh, feeding enough, cleaning coops and cages every day to ensure them always dry, clean, prevent environmental pollution. So, civet will rapid growth and can be prevented from diseases.

Prevention and treatment disease: 

Diarrhea (watery feces): civet often get diarrhea when apply new kind of food. Should be prevention and treatment by mix the drug into their food.  

Coccidia (bloody feces), typhoid disease (high fever, the yellow watery feces): treatment with veterinary drug.
