It's Hawaiian, It's Dutch, It's Ventriloquism?
I have absolutely no idea what is going on with this album, which is why I listen to a lot of music in languages I don't understand, I really enjoy being befuddled. It stimulates the imagination. Splogman, can you explain?

De Skymasters
De Skymasters were an important part of the early days of Dutch radio--just how important I cannot say, thanks to the general wonkiness of Google Translator. Alls I know is that they do some danged peppy versions of the Woody Woodpecker song, "Zambesi", and songs about milkshakes, harmonicas, and chocolate. Their big hit was "Kijk eens in de poppetjes van mijn ogen" ("Look in the eyes of my dolls"?).
What's not to love?

We drinken tot we zinken
Say kids, let's get drunk the Dutch way! By drinken tot zinken, of course. Leading the way is Johnny Hoes, who you surely know for his mega-hits "The Smuggler" and "We Want Fries With Mayonnaise" which sounds like a great way to counteract all that booze. Both the fries and the smuggling. My favorite on the compilation is Dikke Leo's "Een, twee hupsekee". When you see me dancing and singing to that one, you know I'm one or two over the limit.
So raise an Amstel and crank up the drinking songs and get busy drinking! Time's a-wastin!

Tobi Rix is a Serious Musician.
Have I mentioned lately how much I love the Dutch? Yes? Well, they're great, they take everything so seriously, even the Spike Jones-type musicians, who play the genre impeccably, really they do. Toby Rix is saying on the album cover LOOK, see how serious I am? Believe it.

Kom in Mijn Wigwam
No one does wacky quite like the Dutch, God bless 'em. As far as I can figure, this 1962 album by the Cocktail Trio features songs of wigwams, a Chinese guy named Li Wang Tai Tu, kangaroos, and beer. Lots and lots of beer. And then there's a bonus cover version of Alley Oop, what joy.

Rock Over Europe
Who wants some swingin' 50s-60s pop tunes from France, Germany, Italy, Norway....really, all across Europe? Answer: if you know what's good for you, YOU do. De Zwarte Moustachen, Brita Borg's Frankenstein Rock, Hawaiian War Chant from the Netherlands, and the loopy Chimpanzee Rock from the Hula Hawaiians (been looking for this one for a while!), it's ALL good. It's just been posted over at ManzeRock, get it while it's hot.

After five years (3)
What has become of Daan Jansen?
He was one of the youngest contributors to the first CD of WM Recordings: 13 years old, playing and singing his own arrangement and lyrics of the penguin song.
This is Daan now:
Last summer he finished his VWO (highest level of Dutch secundary school) cum laude and twice he has conducted the Youth Symphony Orchestra De Vuurvogel (Firebird) in Zwolle, when playing his own symphonic arrangements of computer game music.
He's studying Business Information Technology now at the University of Twente. Apart from De Vuurvogel he also sings in a pop choir and recently has taken up pianolessons. Right now he is working on a popsong together with Sifra Meutgeert and he plans on writing for mixed voices choirs when he will be "less busy studying".
Together with Jelle-Jan van der Wagt from whom we will be learning more next week, he occasionally makes Z News and other videos

Fashion 1970
"... Think of the photo shoot, where the photographer constantly tells the model not to move or her nipples would show. It looks like everybody on the set may have had a good laugh about this brilliant fashion idea. ..."

Een Neger in Het Dorp!!!
My pal BC sent me a scan of a Dutch children's book he was buying entitled "Een Neger in Het Dorp", or "A Negro in the Town". Which makes it appear that the Dutch (or at least some of them) might have had issues with integration at one time themselves....judging by the terrified looks on the kids faces, and the swirling ominous clouds which foretell inclement weather ahead. Watch your back, kids!!
Or how about if you Netherlanders explain the song below, "Hij was maar 'n neger":
Hij was maar 'n neger, zo'n zwarte
Zoiets haal je niet in je huis
Omdat je 't noodlot dan tartte
Want die zwarten zijn immers niet pluis
Translated for me as, "He was only a Negro, the kind you won't let in your house". Soooo, you Europeans with your impeccable political morals....maybe at one time, some of you all weren't so crazy about outsiders coming to live in your hometown???? Unless they were playing a saxophone or shaking their hips in a banana skirt.

Bye bye, splusp!!!!!
Splusp!!! is being closed. It's time for me to move on. Originally I created this blog to fill the emptyness after my 52 weeks project and it served it's purpose well. It included a few projects within a project. I mention the most important ones to me: the sleevegirls project, the wet theme, Dutch pop stars, 20 splogcasts and recently birds. Besides that I occasionally mentioned special episodes of my activities at Radio Zwolle and my show Vreemde Geluiden in particular.
These and all other post are archived here. This is a first set up. It will probably be changed soon.
I'm not disappearing from the net. When there's something that I absolutely want the masses to know about, I will post it here at PCL Linkdump. Furthermore I shall be posting my compositions and songs, mixes, radioshows and audio findings at the splusp yahoo group and/or at myspace and/or wm-recordings.
The 50 ways to do a cover project will continue at the splusp yahoo group
My home base will remain:

The Singing Sisters
Hear and see Marry and Thea Verhey at splusp. In the sixties they were the most wellknown duo among all the Dutch religious singing sisters with guitar and ukulele.

Thierno Barry and friends: first meeting
These recordings of a Senegalese singer visiting The Netherlands where made during a live radio broadcast january 12th 2007 (except track 7 which was recorded afterwards at René Rikkers' house) with local musicans in Zwolle (Netherlands) which had never played with one another, neither with Thierno Barry. There was a small hour to get to know each other and to agree on what songs to play. There were only a few common French words to communicate with, so we tried to talk in a musical way, although in the small studio it was very difficult to hear each other's instrument while all were playing. Not everything went perfect, but every participant felt that something very special was happening here.

notes:
Thierno Barry sings about life and is here accompanied by local musicians from Zwolle: Inge Pruilaar (guitar and vocal on House of the rising sun and Percussion), René Rikkers (Djembé, Dum dum and percussion), Remco Takken (guitar on House of the rising sun and bass guitar), Jan Turkenburg (flute, pan pipes and penny-whistle)
In Sant Thierno (solo) thanks all his friends that helped him in his life. The recording starts off in limited mono quality (recorded from transmission), for the seperate stereo-mic was switched on a little late.
Track two is an improvisation, that took place during another item in the show, i.o.w. this was not broadcasted.
The house of the rising sun also starts in mono and continues in stereo half-way.
Kairo means: peace! Thierno describes in this song all the countries of Africa that are at war one way or another, the attacks in Europe and the wars all over the world. He urges people to get real and return to civilization.
Sama-way is dedicated to some very special people he has met in The Netherlands.
Sant (reprise) is recorded right after the show. René was so enthusiastic that he invited Thierno to do another recording at home as a demo to promote Thierno's music.
At a young age Thierno Barry played at cultural evenings and at the Alliance Franco/Senegal in Zichuinchor, Senegal. He wanted more, however, so he started an adventurous journey, alone with his guitar. He moved to Abéné, were one day he met René Nieuwenstein who arranged a release of his group Salam on the netlabel WM recordings and invited him to visit The Netherlands.
