Flashback fun—Rebecca with the Veggie team!
When I was growing up, I often stayed at my grandparents’ house back home in Australia. They owned a beautiful, multistoried house, with flower gardens and fruit trees. One of the sweetest things was waking up in the morning to the familiar sound of birds singing outside my window. For the most part they were rainbow lorikeets, native Australian birds whose song is more like a screech than anything else, but to my ears it was beautiful. To God’s ears, the birds’ singing was also beautiful, because it represented their song of love to Him—a song of gratefulness for life and a new day. That experience inspired me to write “Song of Love.” It doesn’t matter to God how well we can sing. What matters is the pure worship that He receives, that our hearts are singing our own unique songs of worship. The love of God is what draws us, keeps us, and invites us to worship Him.
Writing worship songs to God has been one of the things I have most enjoyed about being in this ministry. It’s been awesome to record albums composed entirely of worship songs. And, it’s a beautiful thing to have the experience of God birthing a song in your heart and then hearing an audience using that song to worship God too!
The dramatic encounter in John 4 between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well provides a wonderful glimpse into the kind of worship that pleases God. First of all, the fact that Jesus engaged a woman in conversation is a testimony to the value that God places on every human being. In those days strict rabbis forbade rabbis to greet a woman in public—and especially if she were a Samaritan! After Jesus revealed that He knew the woman’s promiscuous life story, without her providing any details, she knew that He was a “prophet,” so she queried Him on the correct location to worship—where the Samaritans worshiped or where the Jews worshiped at the temple in Jerusalem.
Jesus pointed out that true worship has nothing to do with location, but everything to do with attitude. He said that God was seeking people who desired to worship Him in spirit and truth. True worship is when we, through our spirits (made in the image of God), draw close in friendship and intimacy with our Maker. Genuine worship is when we sincerely seek all of God’s truth, and when our spirits crave meeting with God. The woman responded that she knew she would understand more when Messiah had come. Can’t you just see her jaw dropping to the ground as Jesus delivered His parting words, “I who speak to you am he”? The woman was so excited that she ran to tell others about Him and left her water jar there at the well. Many of the people from her village believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” True worship and adoration often draws others to Jesus.
Are you the kind of worshiper the Father is seeking? Do you crave times of being alone with Him? Here in the Easter season, let’s encourage one another to set aside some time today to do just that.
