Kentucky Fires Back Against Accusation It Paid for Anthony Davis' Commitment

A rumor published on a Chicago Sun-Times blog accusing Kentucky of paying for a high school player's commitment may prove costly for the paper.

Michael O'Brien, who co-authors a high school sports blog for the Sun Times' website, wrote Wednesday that a "reliable source" said that prep star Anthony Davis will attend Kentucky and that "sources/rumors [allege] that the commitment cost $200,000."

Kentucky wasted little time firing back.

Wednesday night, a law firm representing the University sent O'Brien a formal demand to withdraw the story and issue a statement that there was no credible evidence for the allegation of a payment to Davis. The letter, which was signed by Stephen L. Barker of the Lexington, Ky., law firm Sturgill, Turner, Barker & Maloney characterized the story as "far beyond responsible journalism" and threatened to seek damages.

The story was first edited to remove the allegation, then removed from the site.

Davis' father, Anthony Davis Sr., denied any payment had been received or asked for in the same story.

If true, the allegation would represent a gross violation of NCAA rules.

A screen grab of the unedited story can be found here.
