Hard one this; he doesn't fit in a 4-4-2: not prolific enough as a striker, to one-dimensional to be a winger. He's probably very useful in a 4-5-1/4-3-3 playing on the right cutting in on his left, or playing behind the striker as he does for Mexico.

I'd love him to be our prolific inside out winger, cutting in from the right and scoring with his left foot, but frankly I'm just not sure he has the strength/build to do that in the prem at home, let alone at Stoke away on a freezing Wednesday night in January.

I share your concerns, I just feel he is to lightweight to take a midfield spot (where he would be behind Lennon in the queue).

I like to think he could be our number 10, paired with Defoe up front, Bale + Lennon on the wings and Modric + Palacios central, but I still think this team is not hard enough for the premier league.

Against a team that actualy tries to play football, e.g. LeArse, a midfield of Bale, Modric, Dos Santos, Thudd and Lennon, playing 4-2-3-1 (we probably need a better striker for this than we have, but bear with me) means we could probably play a fantastic push-and-run passing game and with Bale, Lennon and Dos Santos, when we break, we'd break fast.

Up until last season we consistently struggled against the 'anti football' teams, I think Palacios helped us a lot with that, but the team you mention is the team I would love to see us play, if only we could get a reliable striker.

Palacios and Thudd together make a great pairing if we now add Sandro then we could play 4-3-2-1 with two attacking wingers, or 4-3-3 with three forwards.

Either way we can sit very deep and hit on the counter, Dos Santos can be very useful in this scenario.

We'd also be left massively exposed against anyone who tried attacking against us. Liverpool can play a 4-2-3-1 because they keep two players lying deep, one of which is considered the world's best defensive midfielders. With those 5 the only one who even comes close is Tommy H and he's slower than my nan (she's dead).

GDS is a good player but he's also a massive party boy. If someone can get him to concentrate on football instead of throwing his potential down the shitter he might do alright.

Switch Dos Santos for Palacios and move Modric up behind the striker and we have a very serviceable 4-2-3-1.

GDS has a season to prove himself as an impact sub/cup player and with the World Cup he just had, we'd be silly not to give him a chance.

That removes GDS entirely from your formation. What we'll actually line up with is similar but Modric will play further back in a 4-2-1-3 or 4-1-2-3, where the 3 are basically a striker and two wide players.

Who is in your 3?

Depends who we sign/sell before the season starts. Could be any number of people really. Keane-Pav-Lennon Modric-Crouch-Krancjar. You could put Bale up that high but then you lose out on one of his best atributes.

Keane-Pav-Lennon, Keane on the left doesn't work and Pav and Lennon have yet to show that they can work together.

Modric-Crouch-Krancjar would be the slowest front three in the prem and none of them score enough (except maybe Krancjar).

Those aren't set in stone, obviously. The real problem with any "play one up front like all the fashionable European teams" is that we don't have anyone capable of playing up front by themselves, which is why you'd have Keane or Defoe occupying one of the wide spots but drifting in/switching positions. Even Spain have David Villa on the left side and he's not a proper winger by any stretch.

He really needs to curb his party habits and knuckle down to make sure he reaches the potential we all know he has.
