About The Alabama Baptist

History of The Alabama Baptist

In the early 1840s, the Baptists of Alabama sought a Baptist newspaper to keep them informed about the work of Baptists in the state, the nation and the world. The Alabama Baptist was the answer. First published on Feb. 4, 1843, in Marion, Ala., the new publication quickly gained the endorsement of Baptist leaders. At the 1843 annual convention, Baptists adopted a resolution declaring, “The Alabama Baptist be employed by the officers of the convention as the organ through which they shall confer with the churches connected with this body.” There has been a strong working relationship between the paper and the state convention ever since.

In 1919, the paper was purchased by the Alabama Baptist State Convention from private ownership. Today The Alabama Baptist is an entity of the state convention owned and operated by a 16-member board of directors elected by the state convention. Each week the state Baptist paper is mailed into more than 100,000 Baptist homes in Alabama providing a readership of more than a quarter of a million people. The paper also is read by subscribers across the nation and on six of the seven continents. The majority of readers are adults who are active in a local Baptist church. Readers come from every walk of life and most socio-economic categories.

Each week The Alabama Baptist attempts to help empower Baptists to live out their Christian discipleship in their personal lives, their professional lives and their lives within the community of faith. The paper provides concise and balanced reporting of events from the world of religion. Practical helps for everyday problems are provided. Moral and ethical issues are examined from a biblical standpoint. Resources for Christian living are shared.

The Alabama Baptist is an award-winning publication having been honored by Associated Church Press, Evangelical Press Association and Religion Communicators Council as the top regional Christian newspaper in America. The paper also has won awards in writing, photography, design and general excellence from these three groups as well as Baptist Communicators Association. The commitment to the Christian faith and the outstanding professional preparation of the paper’s staff is reflected by more than 100 national awards that hang in the Hall of Honor at the state Baptist paper’s office building.
