Las Piñas City holds Water Lily Festival

Las Piñas City held recently its much-anticipated 4th Water Lily Festival at the Carnival Park Covered Court in Barangay Talon 2 to celebrate the remarkable growth of the city’s most vibrant industry.

The event coincided also with the birthday celebration of Rep. Cynthia Villar who was a driving force of Las Piñas City’s water lily weaving industry.

Performances from the Las Piñas brass and lyre bands, together with the Ati-Atihan dance group, choir and dancers from Dr. Filemon Aguilar Information Technology Training Institute (DFCAIT) and the Manunugtog Kawayan ensemble marked the beginning of the festivities.

Las Piñeros and visitors alike enjoyed the day’s festive atmosphere, made more colorful with the booths put up by Las Piñas City’s 20 barangays showcasing their food and product specialties. Other activities included the on-the-spot poster making contest sponsored by DFCAIT; a Water Lily Fashion Show and the Ms. Las Piñas Water Lily 2009, and the Inter-Barangay Dance competition.

Nacionalista Party president Sen. Manny Villar also graced the event, joining his constituents in the day-long celebration. Senator Villar led the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the additional hospital room an blood-letting activity at the Las Piñas General Hospital Stallite and Trauma Center and the blessing of the Las Piñas Science High School.

A known advocate for the protection of the environment and the promotion of entrepreneurship, Sentor Villar attributed the success of the water lily weaving industry to the Sipag at Tiyaga (hard work and perseverance) of the Las Piñeros.

Las Piñas City’s water lily industry has been successful in financially supporting more than 200 families. Residents were trained on different methods of recreating and recycling pads of water lilies into export quality bags, baskets, trays, furniture and other novelty products.

"These products are widely patronized by local buyers and have found a niche in the United States, Japan and European markets," Congresswoman Villar said. The livelihood project also supports the Sagip-Ilog Project aimed at declogging the city’s waterways to prevent flooding during the rainy season.

"I’m really glad that we have gone this far as a community with one goal in mind — to provide decent livelihood to our kababayan. This is just proof that if we work hand in hand, we can empower our people to uplift their lives," Mrs. Villar said.
