Greetings from Abilene, a city located near the center of the great state of Texas.
The Abilene Fire Department was officially organized in 1886 by a handful of residents who wished to address Abilene's fire protection needs. It served as a city service as well as a social club creating a "family" made up of firefighters, children, wives, and other citizens. The department has changed a lot over the years, but we still have a family relationship among our members that work very hard to serve the citizens of Abilene and Taylor County.
Today, our department is staffed by 170 civil service and 6 civilians who are fully paid. The Abilene Fire Department is under the direction of the Fire Chief, appointed by the City Manager, which consists of 2 branches: Tactical Operations and Community & Support Services. Our Department is fortunate to have a volunteer Fire Chaplain who spends time with not only our personnel but also those in need at emergency incidents.
