City Boards and Commissions


Citizens have the opportunity to serve on one of the 37 boards of the City of Abilene. Each board member receives training and orientation to better prepare for a role as a council advisor. Although a few boards have special requirements specific to their particular function, the only prerequisites to serving on most boards are an adequate amount of time and a sincere desire to become involved in the Abilene community.

From time to time, ad-hoc boards or committees are formed for short-term purposes such as studying special issues. These may or may not be appointed by the Council and they are usually active for a short time- until their intended purpose is fulfilled.

Several of the boards were created by an ordinance or resolution which outlines its purpose, number of members (including any specific requirements), meeting dates and times. Applications are available through the City Secretary’s office located in Room 203 at City Hall, 555 Walnut St., and will be provided upon request by contacting the City Secretary at danette.dunlap@abilenetx.com or by calling 676-6202. For your convenience, the attached Board/Commission Candidate Application form can be used; or application can be made online at www.abilenetx.com.

Twice a year, staff and/or board chairpersons provide the Mayor and Council a list of Boards whose members have terms expiring, a list of prospective board members, a chart of racial and gender makeup for each board, a brief summary of board functions and staff recommendations for reappointments and/or new appointments. A fter careful review of board information the Mayor, with Council approval, appoints and reappoints members to the boards.
