Screen Epiphanies: Filmmakers on the Films that Inspired Them

I’ve always loved reading and hearing what great filmmakers think of other great films and directors. You may have noticed that we ask some directors about their favorite films, from time to time, and I’ve even featured other websites and books that delve into this subject on the site from time to time.

Geoffrey Macnab and the British Film Institute have put together a book titled Screen Epiphanies: Filmmakers on the Films that Inspired Them collecting the stories of thirty-five leading international filmmakers focusing on “the film moments that stayed with them long after they left the movie theater” which inspired them to pursue a career in the movie industry.

New York, I Love You Movie Trailer

New York, I Love You

Vivendi Entertainment has released a new movie trailer for the anthology film project New York, I Love You. The movie is the next film from the producers of Paris, je t’aime, and features another anthology of short films, this time focusing on the stories of love in New York’s five boroughs. I LOVE California, but I’ve always wanted to live in Manhattan (maybe someday). Films like this certainly don’t help my obsessions with “Gotham” and short films.

The film includes short films directed by Jian Wen, Mira Nair, Brett Ratner, Allen Hughes, Shekhar Khapur, Natalie Portman, Fatih Akin, Joshua Marston and Randy Balsmyer. The film’s ensemble cast includes: Bradley Cooper, Andy Garcia, Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Natalie Portman, Irrfan Khan, Emilie Ohana, Orlando Bloom, Christina Ricci, Maggie Q, Ethan Hawke, James Caan, Blake Lively, Drea de Matteo, John Hurt, Shia LaBeouf, Burt Young, Chris Cooper, Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman.

Amelia Movie Trailer

amelia_logo

Amelia Earhart may have had quite a presence in the second Night at the Museum movie earlier this summer, where she was played by a spunky Amy Adams, but she’s also getting her own biopic called Amelia, starring Hilary Swank, Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor. The first trailer has debuted at Yahoo, and it’s pretty standard biopic stuff. Which is too bad, because if there was ever a great adventurous biopic meant for young girls, this would be it. See the footage from the Mira Nair-directed film after the jump. Read More »

Movie Trailer: New York, I Love You

From the producers of Paris, je t’aime, comes New York, I Love You, another anthology of 12-short films, this time focusing on the stories of love in New York’s five boroughs. Directed by Allen Hughes, Shekhar Kapur, Joshua Marston, Mira Nair, Brett Ratner,
Fatih Akin, Scarlett Johansson, Ivan Attal, Natalie Portman, Shunji Iwai, Jiang Wen, and Andrei Zvyagintsev. The film’s ensemble cast includes: Kevin Bacon, Maggie Q, Orlando Bloom, James Caan, Hayden Christensen, Blake Lively, Julie Christie, Chris Cooper, Drea de Matteo, Carla Gugino, Ethan Hawke, John Hurt, Shia LaBeouf, Natalie Portman, Rachel Bilson, Christina Ricci, Olivia Thirlby, Robin Wright Penn, Anton Yelchin, Burt Young and more.

I never got a chance to see Paris, je t’aime, but the idea always seemed appealing to me. While I live in probably the greatest city in the States - San Francisco, Manhattan has always been my favorite big screen city setting. New York, I Love You will screen as a work in progress at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, and is expected to hit theaters in mid-february 2009.
