Family Changes and Feelings

Join us for this week's podcast!

This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Rachel, Elizabeth and I discuss recent changes in our homes.  As Elizabeth and I both watch children move out of the “nest” and into exciting new phases of life, we chat about how moms deal with the emotions related to these types of changes.  When you have times of emotion in your life, do you hide your true feelings from... College Roll Call

Who's going where? Adopt a college kid to pray for today!

I’ve been majorly preoccupied the past few days with the launching of my son Eric off to college.  I’ll be sure to continue to share insights on that during the next few days here on the blog - we leave tonight to drive to San Francisco.  Early tomorrow morning, we’ll put Eric on a plane to Boston, where he’ll be attending pre-orientation at Harvard.  Then next Tuesday, Greg and I will fly out to... Countdown to College

The packing has begun

This is one of those “real world” types of blog posts where I open the window into our home and give you a peek into the chaos that sometimes is the Hendey household.

We are on the “countdown” to college.  Next Thursday, Greg and I will drive to San Francisco and put Eric on an airplane at 6 am.  He’ll land in Boston, take the subway on his own to Cambridge, and begin his college career at Harvard... READ MORE

Going Back

Reunions: yay or nay?

This weekend I was blessed to attend my college reunion.

Not my class reunion, but the reunion of my entire college, a now-defunct school that has a total alumni population of only a couple hundred people.

I helped organize the reunion, and we were excited to have over a hundred attendees, including several dozen children. If there’s anything better than seeing old friends and classmates, it’s seeing... READ MORE

Future Friends

Meeting future classmates!

Greetings from a hotel room in Northern California.  We’re on the road tonight for a special meetup.  Our Eric, the eighteen year old recent graduate, will be gathering for an informal dinner with members of his future college class from the Northern California area.

He’s been excited all week, a bit anxious and curious about these new friends, who could become a large part of his life during the... READ MORE

Flying Solo

When kids travel alone...

For the first time since 3:00 am on Sunday, I’m breathing deeply.  The cause for my malaise?  My eldest, Eric, took off early Sunday morning for a cross country flight to embark on a college scholarship interview and recruiting trip.

His exodus involved a three hour drive with my husband to San Francisco, and two solo flights with a pretty quick connection.  Today, after three days filled with fun... READ MORE

The Waiting Game

Are you waiting for letters from colleges?

I just hung up the telephone with a girlfriend who was lamenting over an experiencing we are sharing together with our sons this year… the “waiting game”.  Both of our boys, who have known one another since Kindergarten, are waiting for college admissions decisions.  And so are their moms…

Max and Eric are both great students with wonderful prospects.  Both have applied to multiple colleges around... READ MORE

More Room at the Inn

Have you gotten a chance yet to check out the incredible interview Lisa shared over the weekend with Lacy Dodd, a single mom turned pro-life advocate?

For those who would like more information about this amazing young woman and her inspiring ministry, you can read the recent profile of Room at the Inn in the National Catholic Register.

Single Mom is a Champion for Life

Room at the Inn partners with Belmont Abbey College to reach out to college women facing unplanned pregnancies

A huge thanks to my friend Tony Rossi of Christopher Closeup for bringing to my attention the story of Lacy Dodd, a board member of Room at the Inn, a Charlotte based pregnancy resource center and maternity after-care facility.  During this month of October when we pray for the dignity of all human life, Lacy is a true champion for the unborn.

I hope you will take a few minutes to listen to Tony’s recent Christopher Closeup interview with Lacy,... READ MORE

College Admissions and Facebook

To friend or not to friend...

Most of you know that my son Eric is in the throes of applying to college.  It’s likely during the next several months that I’ll be writing a great deal on this topic, not only for those of you with high school seniors, but also for those with younger children too.  You’d be amazed how quickly this process sneaks up on you, and it seems impossible to be “over-prepared” to apply to college.

So many... READ MORE
