Egg Recall

Have you checked yours?

I’m sure many of you have seen this already, but in case you haven’t: a new outbreak of salmonella poisoning has led to an egg recall.

The FDA has details about it here.

Pro-Life TV Show Wins Emmy Award

(Video is a clip of Facing Life Head On trailer)

I was excited to learn this week that Facing Life Head On, a weekly pro-life television show, was awarded a regional Emmy in the category of Interview and Discussion.

The show, which is a project of the Life Issues Institute, won the award on the strength of an episode in which Mattes interviewed Missy Davert, a woman who is 2 feet 11 inches tall and... READ MORE

A Real Public Service

Bert was always my favorite character in Mary Poppins, but I like Dick Van Dyke even more now.

The actor is donating his time as the new spokesperson for the Cell Therapy Foundation, which supports and educates about adult stem cell research. It’s good work!

You can see the first PSA featuring Mr. Van Dyke at the Cell Therapy Foundation’s website.

Bristol and Levi

Why is this news?

All over the Internet today, people are talking about Bristol Palin’s announcement (in US Weekly?!) that she is engaged to Levi Johnston, the father of her son. Do you remember these two? Sarah Palin’s teenage daughter who was revealed to be pregnant during the Presidential campaign. And then the baby was born. And then the boyfriend/girlfriend broke up.

I actually debated for some time even posting... READ MORE

Freezing for Later?

A new (awful) use of IVF

Here’s a new way to use tiny human beings: as “insurance against infertility.”

Those are the words of Gillian St. Lawrence, a Georgetown woman who did four in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles last year. She and her husband weren’t trying to get pregnant; they were just making embryos to freeze. They now have five embryos frozen, and they’ll transfer them a few years down the road, when they’re “ready... READ MORE

News Light

Read the news and go to bed smiling

Especially since becoming a mother, I have trouble reading the news. It seems like there are so many gruesome or depressing stories, and it’s easy to get bogged down.

Recently after a quick scan of the online news, I was looking for a cheery story, anything that would make me feel a little better about the state of the world.

I Googled “happy news.” And look what I found!

Someone runs an entire website... READ MORE

Summer Schedules and Allowances

We slip into summer mode on this week's podcast.

This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Danielle, Rachel and I talk about the transition into summer.  With the more relaxed days of summer, how are you making the transition as a family? What are some things that you “let go” in summertime and what are some activities your family takes up? How do you maintain a balance between summer fun and getting things done?... READ MORE

Broken Church, Broken Heart

How would you advise this mom if she were your friend?

I received a very troubling email recently from a mom who is obviously experiencing great despair about her family’s faith life.  I thought I would share a portion of her comments with you, as well as part of my reply in the hopes that you could perhaps chime in with some additional encouragement and recommendations of practical steps she might take.  Here is part of her email:

I don’t know what to... READ MORE

Is Tobacco Candy a Good Idea?

Tic-Tac-like 'Camel Orbs' Spark Controversy
The New York Times

Here’s a New York Times story that made me do a double take this weekend:

Flavored Tobacco Pellets Are Denounced as Lure to Young Users:

R. J. Reynolds Tobacco, the nation’s second-largest cigarette maker behind Philip Morris, is test marketing the product, Camel Orbs, along with other dissolvable tobacco products, in three cities. It is part of a broad industry trend to create smokeless products... READ MORE

Too Soon for Tiger?

Has his return to golf come too quickly?

Tomorrow at 1:42 pm, Tiger Woods will tee off at the Masters Tournament in August, Georgia following a four month hiatus brought on by a disastrous personal life.  We don’t typically talk golf here at Faith & Family, but since Tiger’s personal breakdown has a whole lot to do with family, I feel like this topic might be fair game.

At his press conference on Monday, the following question and answer... READ MORE
