Taipei to bid to host 2019 Asian Games

Taipei is going to make a bid to host the 2019 Asian Games. That was the word from Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin on Wednesday. Hau said that the host of the 2010 games – the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – has pledged to back the plan.

Hau made the announcement at a Guangzhou development forum in Taipei attended by Guangzhou Mayor Wan Qingliang.

Hau said that there is fierce competition for the right to host the games, with Dubai, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam all putting in bids. He also said he hopes that Guangzhou will help Taipei to win the rights to host the event.

If Taipei wins the bid, the 2019 Asian Games would be the biggest international sporting event ever held in Taiwan.
