Very limited service restored; Expect similar delays Tuesday
Very limited LIRR service has been restored on all branches but with significant delays, the MTA reported. The commuter rail system carries about 265,000 daily riders.
There were long delays for Monday’s evening rush hour. A fire broke out at about 11 a.m in a switching tower. No injuries were reported. The tower, which is manned by workers who control which trains go onto which tracks by flipping a series of levers, was briefly evacuated, an LIRR spokesman said earlier Monday.
The Jamaica station is a major transfer point for commuters going to or from Manhattan and Brooklyn and to various locations across Long Island. The Port Washington branch was not affected, because it does not travel through Jamaica.
A limited schedule was expected to be implemented for Tuesday’s morning rush hour, given the extent of the significant electrical damage and the testing of repaired equipment, said LIRR spokesman Joe Calderone.
The plan is likely to be similar to the limited service Monday afternoon for the estimated 110,000 evening rush hour passengers who typically commute home, according to LIRR officials.
Despite the disruptions, the scene at Penn Station around 6:30 Monday night was “a sea of calm,” said Maureen Michaels, the chairwoman of the watchdog group LIRR Commuter’s Council.
“Everything was stunningly smooth,” Michaels said. “It was really quite orderly. There were no crowds.”
