Creating an effective workspace.


Office 2Some of us work at home, some of us work in our own office, and some of us work in an office owned or run by someone else.

But we'd be hard pressed to find one of us who doesn't fall somewhere along the spectrum of chair-desk-computer-printer-filing cabinet-other gizmos.

So... how can you make this arrangment a paradise of productivity?

Here are the five things you cannot afford to go on putting up with if they are not up to par. If you upgrade these things to an ideal level, I promise you will feel more productive, motivated, and satisfied in your work.

Here's the list:

  1. Uncomfortable Chair. We all sit in them all day when we work. And unless you have a proper one, you'll be paying for it in massage, pain and even unnecessary surgery. I have seen grad students blow disks because of bad chairs. If you are skimping, stop. No dining room chairs, no cheapo options. Get a real chair. Please! There are sales online. Your back, your health, and your business will thank you.
  2. Insufficient shelving. This was a big one in my office. Until we got floor to ceiling shelves, there were piles on the floor. Books everywhere. Do you want to work in an office with piles on the floor and books crammed in? I'll bet you don't, so do yourself a big old favor. Elfa is on sale at the Container Store right now!
  3. Bad lighting. If you can't see what you're doing, it's pretty hard to get anything done. And as much as we all hated it when mom snuck up behind us and turned on lights as we were doing homework, she was right. If you get a headache from eyestrain, you're going nowhere fast work-wise. Pick something pretty and it will be a nice accent for your space!
  4. Filing. There is no better time to get your filing under control than right at the beginning of the year. Get an accordion file for receipts and your tax person will love you. Have an alphebetized system in a solid fling cabinet with pretty folders so you can find everything when you need it and you will love yourself. Get help on this one if you need it. It's worth the time to get it right.
  5. Blah Decor. If you feel ho-hum about your work space, your time in it will be less enjoyable, less inspired, and less effective. Once you've got all the above taken care of, take a look at the space itself. What would make it really pop for you? A coat of paint in a wild color? A fun new calendar? Some framed pics of family, friends and loved ones on your desk? Make sure you add touches that make you feel happy in your workspace and your output will flow effortlessly. Because, as we all know, the first step is getting in the office.
