Assyrian memorial vandalised

30 Aug, 2010 11:09 AM
A memorial dedicated to the Assyrian genocide during World War One has been desecrated just weeks after it was officially unveiled.

The monument, on the corner of Smithfield Road and Elizabeth Drive, was unveiled on August 7 after a planning and approval process marred by controversy.

Vandals attacked the $70,000 memorial over the weekend, spray-painting offensive slogans on it.

A war memorial in Fairfield Park, dedicated to Australian and Assyrian soldiers who fought together, was also vandalised with a mixture of concrete and paint.

I knew those cowards would vandalise the monument. I dont usually generalise but the majority of THOSE people always resort to acts of crime. Its just in their nature, through the religon that has brought them up.

Quite disgusting, I saw they have vandalise with the Islamic symbol sprayed on the monument, and here we have to tolerate these kind of thugs? We are labelled as racist if we criticise Islamic culture but they can go around being intolerant towards other cultures? Shame.

By this act they admit their responsibility of the Assyrian genocide

This horrific act which has taken place has nothing to do with a person's upbringing through Islam. It is unfortunate that there are individuals who actually haven't been brought up with the teachings of Islam and act ignorantly. Islam teaches good character and morals and condemns racism and nationalism. In addition, a religion cannot be criticised based on the actions of certain individuals. You can speak out against them for what they have done, as will I, but to start attacking Islam and branding it in a negative manner is nothing but generalisation and labelling. Ignorant vandals should not shape the view you have of an entire faith.

If this is what happens to an Assyrian monument in a free country like Australia, imagine what actually happened to them living in an Islamic empire in 1914. Also note that many Churches have also been bombed in Iraq since the war on terror. It is clear the security of the Assyrian people remains in question and that Islamic extremists are making it hard for them in Australia. You don't see Christians doing graffiti of Crosses on Islamic icons in Australia, why should we tolerate this? Assyrians were persecuted because of their religion and continue to be persecuted to this day on that basis.

I am assyrian - so befor we start criticising Turkish people ,we must remember in our own community we had many Asyrians aginst building this memorial .and we had these split amoungs us since 6700,years ago until today .for the last 50 years Assyrian had many split communities in Australia unitl today - so please start looking for these truble makers in our own community rather than othersbecause we had similar to these many other times from our own people - so dont be surpised . Us assyrians have 20 faces, depends each day who talks to us .

Reply to Bazrain Doesn't crescent represent Islam? With a star in middle of it confirms it's the act of Muslims from Turkey. So start speaking up against those cowards and tell your ambassador to pay for the damage then I will be on your side.
