Mushroom hunt claims 18 lives

At least 18 mushroom-lovers have been killed in accidents while hunting for their favourite fungi in the mountains and forests of northern Italy.

Mountain rescuers say eager mushroom seekers are abandoning safety procedures as they don camouflage and hunt in darkness to protect coveted troves, La Repubblica newspaper reported on Sunday.

"There is too much carelessness. Too many people don't give a darn about the right rules and unfortunately this is the result," Gino Comelli, head of the Alpine rescue service in northwest Italy's Valle di Fassa, told the newspaper.

Seventeen people have died in nine days - six in 48 hours alone - mostly from sliding off steep, damp slopes in the northern mountains, la Repubblica said in a story headlined "the massacre of the mushroom hunters".

Another person has been missing for more than a week, it said.

Ansa news agency said a man who had been hunting mushrooms was found dead on Sunday in the Alpine region of Valtellina.

A combination of August thunderstorms and hot weather has led to a bumper mushroom crop that has drawn the first hunters of what is expected to be a boom season.

Wow you're a funghi ... got any spore?
  • HenryLloydMoon
    "... don't give a darn"?
  • snotcricket
If only they'd have had the Jamie Oliver recipe for a miwllyun & wun uses for garlic this most dangerous of foodstuff could have been rendered safe & most likely inedible.
  • stevvi
Believe me, I do remember those days, if only hazily :)
  • I think you might be missing my point. BTW like most things in moderation, magic mushrooms won't do you any harm unless, you are one of the few that has underlying problems in the first place. But that's just my opinion.
  • stickybud
Exactly. Just goes to show what a joke drugs prohibition is, when tobacco and alcohol, legal recreational drugs, kill about 120,000 and 50,000 people respectively. Yet the illegal cannabis has not only killed nobody, but is turning out to be more of a medicinal wonder than people realised. Mephedrone was banned in a government knee-jerk reaction to two young men who died after supposedly taking it, then it was shown that they hadn't taken it at all. In fact, it has only ever been implicated in one death, and this was when it was used alongside another substance. If these fools want to stop being laughing stocks, they should look seriously at the issues, and the discriminatory laws that cause so much harm to society, and heed the advice of the experts.
  • You can't make a mushroom omelette without breaking some legs :)
  • Yeah but you have to be very careful when picking them, making sure you only pick good ones and not poisonous ones. Hard to tell in the dark I'd imagine.
  • eltomo
dont pick at night, dont eat till youve see them in daylight, lesson one. also mushroom tea works a charm!
  • VivaLaRevolution
And I thought they died eating the wrong mushrooms.
  • sheherezade
I confess! I do represent the Freedom Fighters... and I am not Italian (the ones in the news are a splinter faction). I, too, am now on the run having been seen eating a mushroom omelette!
  • stevvi
You said "the Italian force..." and yet they aren't now Italian but some new non-national fungus faction? I smell a rat. Just tell us who you are, who you represent, what you demand for your spores and be done with the whole sordid affair ;)
  • rumpledumplin
    Darwin was right!!
  • If half that many people died from a drug in a week, they would ban it. That's the only funny thing I find about this.
  • They don't want other people to know where their stash is. :)
  • How silly, you can find them much easier in daylight!
  • stickybud
Not very. It depends on the state of your mind when you take them, so you shouldn't do it if you are feeling depressed, or in an otherwise unhappy frame. I don't think there are any recorded deaths, but I suppose hallucinations can always lead to risky behaviour. They have been acknowledged by psychiatrists as providing a worthwhile spiritual experience. So just another example of the nanny government telling us what we can't put into our own bodies, and attempting to control our minds.

    Greedy little baskets!
  • VicTheBrit
Don't worry, I'm sure all the NuLabour crew will be out there soon hunting for wild geese.
  • stevvi
... and should we be forcibly petitioning the Italians for using up our quota of EU Mushrooming deaths? The b4astards... ;)
  • stevvi
    I love this non-logic :)
  • rumpledumplin
Any mushroom that can't see through camouflage deserves to be eaten!!
  • What's the EU quota for mushroom deaths?
  • davdos
mmmmm boletus Edulis, Ceps, Honey Bun, come to Daddy and his saute pan.
  • sheherezade
    n. pl. fungi or funguses (Dictionary) ... but, of course, the Freedom Fighters referred to are not Italian ... they are funguses whose language abilities do not match yours :)
  • stevvi
Surely the Italians would know the plural of fungus?
  • tetralyre
This story is mushrooming out of all proportion and is more than a truffling disturbing.
  • stevvi
I totally agree but won't get into a debate on the whole futile banning drugs thing.
  • stevvi
Magic mushrooms are banned... although I'm not too sure how vicious they are towards humans.
  • You grow pot in your garden, that's nice :) Is it any good?
  • P
The funguy to be with, right on all counts
  • Chippychap
Some of them mushrooms can be vicious.

This is revenge! When will the Indie print the truth about the Italian force know as 'Funguses Fight For Freedom'?
