Fresh Mogadishu clashes kill six

MOGADISHU (AFP) – Clashes in Somalia pitting Islamist radicals against government troops backed by African Union forces have killed at least six civilians and wounded 16, officials and medical sources said Monday.

The fighting erupted on Sunday when fighters from the Al Qaeda-inspired Shebab movement attacked a government barracks around Sigale in the capital's Hodan neighbourhood.

The attack drew a retaliatory operation from government forces, sparking an intense battle involving gun, mortar and artillery fire.

"Six are confirmed dead and 16 others were wounded on Monday," Ali Muse, the head of Mogadishu's ambulance services, told AFP.

The government claimed it had now secured the area but a spokesman for the Shebab declared victory, claiming the insurgents had killed more than 10 government forces.

"Our forces have regained control of a key position that was captured by the anti-peace forces for a day," police spokesman Abdullahi Hassan Bariise said.

"They attempted to recapture the position but we defeated them again on Monday," he added.

"The invading Christian forces at the presidential palace tried to deploy reinforcements to their positions... and the mujahideen have attacked them, killing more than ten," Shebab spokesman Sheikh Abdulaziz Abu Musab said.

"We are currently gaining ground in the Mogadishu battle and the claim by the apostate government that it recaptured one of the positions it had lost is not true," he added.

Due to the fighting in Mogadishu, access to some areas was almost impossible Monday and AFP was not able to verify independently who was controlling the disputed Sigale neighbourhood.

More than 80 people have been killed in intense clashes in Mogadishu over the past week.

The United Nations, USA, European Union are hypocrites. I have been doubtiful but now agree that the USA and Britain went to Iraq for oil. I used to defend the cause of the Iraq invasion, but with the way am seeing how us, Africans are being treated when it comes to sending troops to Somalia to help the African Union troops fight the terrorists, i now believe Iraq was invaded for oil.

If only Somalia had oil, the USA and European Union could have sent troops to Somalia in the name of the United Nations or Unilaterally.

I totally agree with Somalian President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed about the unrealistic of expecting the forces of an ill-equipped government "to contain the evil al-Qaida-al-Shabab alliance."

Britain and USA have been begging Yemen to send their troops to fight the same terrorists in these countries but as, as Somalian President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed has stated, "The Somali government has neither similar support nor nearly as much resources as those countries have. Yet it's facing similar, if not more potent enemy."

Only God knows better why the world has been very unfair to Somalia and should leave terrorism fight in Africa to underfunded troops and Somalian troops!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't even know why the media should wrongly report that, "Somalia's fragile, U.N.-backed government has struggled for years to gain relevancy, but corruption and its minuscule footprint in the country." When corruption in Afghanistan is endemic and the USA and Coalition troops/government have failed to influence its eradication.

What does the world wants to achieve out of the collapse of the Somalian government and the coming in of a terrorist organisation? What type of experiment is this?

If Somalia had oil could this have changed the response from the USA and European Union or even China? May be they could have been begging to send troops as they are doing to Yemen?

Mogadishu This is where the terrorist are, where is the big US military? Total wimps, USA total wimps. Do what you say and fight a war against terrorists and not women and children in Afghanistan.

Oh Richard--you poor misguided soul.....Jesus NEVER cared about anything but NOT hanging on that cross! and his FOLLOWERS (you all) did not come to his aid! He thought he had taught you enough--but alas,he was wrong! His followers let him DIE upon that cross instead of standing up to the powers that killed him---shame on all you Christians for trying to bring him back now. What reason could he possibly have for returning?

How can a religon of professed peace continue to murder inocent people, and treat there women so badly. Are all islamic men so afraid of themselse that they have to take their hate onto people that just want a better life? What do they think they will have if they win somewhere, what kind of a country and are these the kind of leaders they want? WHO WILL STAY TO GOVERN? The Imam couldn"t even turn on a light bulb whithout help let alone run the sewage plant.or an electric plant. Maybe they are just as happy living in the 15th century and being ignorant nomads.

What is really crazy is that there are already two major 'flavors' of muslim , so if they take over the whole world there will always be violence, even between muslims.Every major religion has splintered into sub-groups that are persecuted to extinction or rise to replace the old faith. How do we stop human behaviors such as this? And how do we stop the human greed that funds the violence via arms sales? It is amazing that we can not get beyond "my immaginary friend is better than your immaginary friend."

You know - those guns were not made in Africa - were they? if you give a 12 year old crazed bully a gun in the U.S. - you'd go to jail. Yet overseas - we give people with the brain of a 10-12 year old all sorts of weapons.....than wander why things go wrong. The people that sell those guns are just as guilty of murder, if not more guilty, as those that did the killing.
