The Challenge of Prayer
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Wednesday, August 11, 2010
My friend Fr. Tim sent this along to me this morning. I think it’s very powerful for people wondering when God is going to answer their prayers.
I Will Move The Rock
Once upon a time…there was a man who was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light and the Savior appeared. The Lord told the man He had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin.... READ MORE
How to Love a Homosexual
Posted by Fr. John Bartunek, LC in Family on Tuesday, July 20, 2010
(Editor’s note: We received the following letter from a Faith & Family magazine reader in response to Melinda’s Selmys’s article about homosexuality in our Summer issue.)
Q: I would like to respond with much disappointment to the article, “How to Love a Homosexual” by Melinda Selmys, in the Summer 2010 issue. She says on p. 65, entitled, #5:
“In essentials, orthodoxy, in non-essentials, liberty. Don’t... READ MORE
Chaplains & Romance In The Workplace
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Wednesday, June 30, 2010
This article on workplace chaplaincy caught my eye last week.
I’d never heard of such a thing.
In the form presented in the video above, it appears more like counseling than what I’d think of as religious.
I’m fascinated that employers apparently increasingly realize that employees require spiritual care they may not be getting elsewhere.
In the article, there’s a more directly religious model... READ MORE
Nurturing Faith When You're On Your Own
Posted by Fr. John Bartunek, LC in Faith on Monday, June 28, 2010
Q: What do you think about faith-parenting alone?
A: The resonance that this question has had with our readers (Lisa received a slew of heartfelt responses) reflects the reality that we are in a post-Christian culture.
In the early centuries of the Church, while the culture of the Roman Empire was still pagan, people became Christians individually, instead of being brought up in a Christian family.... READ MORE
She Shouldn't Be Afraid

For years my daughter was terrified to have clothes put on over her head.
We’d become resigned to it, become experts at sliding shirts and dresses over her small ribs, at maneuvering shoulders through necklines.
Then a few months ago, she finally responded to my coaxing and agreed to try putting a shirt over her head. I promised her that the hole was big enough, and she summoned her courage, grabbed... READ MORE

This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Danielle is joined by wonderful friend and fellow author Heidi Bratton. Heidi is the author of Making Peace with Motherhood … And Creating a Better You and her Celebrate series of board books. Their conversation today revolves around Heidi’s recent post at Faith & Family entitled “Plow, Pluck, Pull, Repeat”. In this conversation... READ MORE
Still Loads To Do

This profile of retiring octogenarian priest Fr. John Flynn is nice.
And in the New York Times, no less!
Makes a fitting (slightly belated) close to the Year of the Priest, I think.

Ask a Priest vol.19
I was somewhat surprised at the conversation sparked by the Q&A regarding indulgences.
At the risk of aggravating current misunderstandings, I thought I should share a couple more thoughts.
The Days of Our Indulgences
I want to start with two clarifications. First of all, one reader referred to the older practice of linking indulgences with particular numbers of “days” in purgatory.... READ MORE

Happy Feast Day!
Did your parish have a Eucharistic procession or other special observation of the day?
Ours did (or will, we’re on our way): procession around the neighborhood, followed by a potluck lunch.
The Pope celebrated in Cyprus, for an ecumenical crowd. Here’s his homily, partly in French.
More on Moms and Mini-Men

Further Thoughts on Last Week’s Question:
Q: I am a mom of a 14 year old son. He talks quite a bit with his dad about sports and school and such, but clams up with me. I don’t have this problem with my two older daughters. I would love to help encourage him to grow in his faith life, but am I being unrealistic? Should a mom expect a more “distant” faith relationship with her son?
In Part I of the answer to this excellent question,... READ MORE
