NEW DELHI, India -- Nine of 12 soft drink samples produced by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo operators in India failed to meet European Union safety standards for pesticide residue, but are considered safe under local standards, the nation's health minister said yesterday.

The government tests found pesticide residues were below EU limits in three of the samples tested, [Sushma Swaraj] said, but in nine cases the residues were 1.6 to 5.2 times higher than the EU standard. Both companies had claimed their products were acceptable under EU guidelines.
