The finished piece. An experimental piece based around particle system generated by music and sound, pieced together to create a narrative of a cycle of life. Hopefully reflecting warmth, confusion discomfort and peace. This is the final version. Using Trapcode particular 2 and after effects. oh! and soundkeys.

    Nice,Stunning,
How did you created Shadows/Reflection on Floor of Particular between time 1-55 to 2-32 please?
    Thanks
  •
  • chris lavelle 4 months ago
Hi Qaiser, render the piece with alpha, scale on the Y axis, change transparency and blur and hue. couple this with the caustics effect and bingo.
    hope this helps.

Mindblowingly beautiful, truly art in motion.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how many and how complex where the expressions you used for this (1 being the classic simple wiggle expr. and 10 one of them Dan Ebbert's trigonometry-ladden inverse kinematics stuff)?
  •
  • chris lavelle 4 months ago
Hi Francisco, thank you for your kind words. The expressions i used throughout ranged from the simple wiggle for simple scenery effects to value dependent expressions based upon frequencies generated via soundkeys. These were for the particle attributes. There was nothing in there needed that would compare with Dan's fantastic expressions.

Yes, it does indeed reflect warmth, confusion discomfort and peace, and other things too. The music selections all worked well together, and yet were separate too. The video as a whole, has a wonderful notion about it.

Were there many drafts in the process? and is a part of an ongoing series?
It is a Great Piece, and glad to have discovered it here on the site via the "staff picks".
  • chris lavelle 4 months ago
Hi there, thanks for the comments and in answer to your question there were quite a few offshoots that shall become pieces in their own right. This however mainly evolved as one piece over time. There is another version of the video that uses more light and dark and it changes the whole ambience somewhat. I may get round to putting this together as the dynamic is vastly different. My next project will be huge hopefully with a 360 degree 10ft high video wall wrap around, i am currently in discussions about getting this together as a walk in installation.
    cheers
    chris

Amazing work, really soothing. A great use of particular 2. I have a question about the music. Was this a track you put together? It sounds like a combination of many tracks personally, or was this just one single piece of music?

    Thanks again, Liam
  • chris lavelle 4 months ago
Hi Liam, The soundtrack is a composite of many things. Mostly Loops from various sound software together with abstract sounds i have trawled and some i recorded myself. Toward the end i used part of a song called castaway which was too beautiful and perfectly fitting to ignore.
    regards
    Chris

Chris just finished an experimental piece based around a particle system generated by music and sound, pieced together to create a narrative of a cycle of life, called Ascension. Created using Trapcode Particular 2, Adobe After Effects and Soundkeys, he's definitely captured a mesmerizing mix of life. Awesome stuff Chris! andrewgill.co.za/ascension-by-chris-lavelle/
