A's Art? What do you think?

I first posted this on November 4, 2007, on my other blog. I saw Emily's Dubya's artwork and thought I'd repost this. A was 6 years old when he drew this.

A's Art? What do you think?

A has been in OT for over 4 years now, as well as years of PT. He has always been in the first percentile, extremely delayed for fine motor skills. He has always hated coloring and anything that was too hard for him with fine motor. He has such low tone he couldn't hold a pencil for long, and was using a ping pong ball like thing on his pencils to be able to hold onto them until this year.

All of a sudden it has clicked! He has grown to enjoy writing, painting, coloring and puzzles/games in books, and any kind of artwork, really, just in the last two months! He works so hard, and now it is so great to see him enjoying and making up his own words, "spelling" and things. I have started him "journaling" to help him to enjoy this and help with reading and spelling and telling stories.

Yesterday he "doodled" on his art easel paper. I keep looking at it, it is unlike anything he has done before. It has always looked kind of messy, but improving. But what he did yesterday looks like a piece of artwork to me. My husband said the same thing. There are names and number and letters all woven together, and except for the ball point pen he used on it at the end, the whole thing looks to me like a deliberate piece of art.

What do you think?

I like it!

It kind of reminds me of ancient Anasazi cliff dweller paintings in the Southwest United States.
