New UK Quad Poster for ‘Let Me In’

In just a couple of weeks, we can all start arguing in earnest about the merits of Let Me In, the new version of Let the Right One In, directed by Matt Reeves. Word out of festivals so far has been mixed to good, with many saying the film stands on its own. Until then we can enjoy some pretty good marketing designs for the film, like the new UK quad poster pictured in part above.

I’m not certain if this poster was designed by All City Media, the company that did the lovely original quad for Let the Right One In. But this new design sure bears a striking resemblance to the Tyler Stout redesigned poster for Let the Right One In, which was recently part of AllCity’s gallery show AllCity Redrawn. Hm.

Either way, it’s about the nicest ‘floating heads’ poster you’re likely to see this weekend. See the full image after the break. Read More »

Chances are, if you were born in the last 30 years, you’ve either heard of or read one of R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books. The series, which features horror stories for kids, contains over 150 books which have sold over 300 million copies worldwide. The only bigger young adult publishing franchise is Harry Potter. Columbia Pictures picked up the film rights in 2008 and have just announced a screenwriter to kick-start the book series as a potential live-action franchise: Carl Ellsworth, the writer behind Disturbia, Red Eye and The Last House On the Left remake. It’ll be produced by Neal Moritz of Original Film and Deborah Forte of Scholastic Entertainment, who currently publishes the books. We have more details after the jump. Read More »

The deals just keep coming out of the Toronto Film Festival. Earlier this week James Gunn’s Super was purchased by IFC, Sarah’s Key starring Kristin Scott Thomas was picked up by The Weinstein Company (who also grabbed Dirty Girl with Milla Jovovich), Kevin Spacey’s Casino Jack was picked up by ATO Pictures and Sony Pictures Classics acquired Barney’s Version starring Paul Giamatti.

Wednesday, news broke that more movies were flying off the shelves. The Weinstein Company picked up the highly buzzed about Submarine (which Peter loved, read his review here), Anchor Bay grabbed the school shooting drama Beautiful Boy starring Maria Bello, Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate teamed up to grab Robert Redford’s The Conspirator and Sony Pictures Worldwide bought the rights to Insidious, the James Wan thriller. Briefly: M Night Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital are moving full speed ahead with the ‘Night Chronicles’ series, audience laughter at trailers for Devil be damned. (And, honestly, I half expect the people that see Devil to come away liking it. But we’ll find out soon enough.) A while back, Buried screenwriter Chris Sparling was hired to write the second Night Chronicles film, Twelve Strangers.

The name of the film has now been changed; it will go out under the title Reincarnate, according to Deadline. The same report also confirms the hire of The Last Exorcism director Daniel Stamm to helm the picture. No other info is available, including casting. The film won’t shoot until next year, so the cast info will be a couple months off.

Other than the title, it doesn’t sound like much has changed. The logline remains “While deciding the fate of an accused murderer, a jury is haunted by supernatural forces that hold the key to the case.” Meanwhile, the Night Chronicles film I’m more curious to hear about is the third, which will supposedly be based on some major story point and/or character originally devised for Unbreakable 2.

I’ve got a feeling that this is a little like Aliens vs Predator: whichever wins, we lose. A couple days ago there was word that Andy Fickman (The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain) would direct Anna Faris in TMI. That’s the Kirsten Smith and Marc Klein script originally said to be about two “just friends” types who finally realize they’re made for each other after a drug-induced evening of debauchery.” Ryan Reynolds was once attached, but he’s only producing, not appearing. Variety’s report last week when Fickman was reported as directed called it slightly differently, saying it’s about “best friends who sleep together and quickly find that they know too much about one another to maintain a relationship.”

So TMI was last week for Fickman. Now Production Weekly reports that he is “attached to direct the horror/comedy spec Boy Scouts vs. Zombies written by Carrie Evans & Emi Mochizuki.” That’s all we’ve got on that script at this point, but the title hopefully gives away everything you need to know. So which one will be first? Can’t say for sure at this point. Bet on TMI, since it’s been in the pipeline for a while. [image via Flickr]

TIFF Movie Review: John Carpenter’s The Ward

John Carpenter is a celebrated filmmaker who frequently has worked in the sci-fi and horror genres. He is one of the brand name filmmakers from the 1970’s-80’s. His filmography includes Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, many of which have already been remade or are currently in development for a big screen redo. Carptener’s career hit a slump in the 1990’s with films like Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Village of the Damned, Escape from LA, Vampire$ and. Ghosts of Mars. Carpenter has not made a feature film in almost nine years.

This year at the Toronto International Film Festival, Carpenter makes his return to the big screen with a film called The Ward. Does this mark a triumphant return for Carpenter? Unfortunately not.

We’ll probably be talking a lot about At the Mountains of Madness over the next year, as Guillermo del Toro prepares the project and, if things go well, the cameras roll. We’ve already heard a bit about the film from producer James Cameron’s perspective, but now Guillermo del Toro has explained some of his approach to bringing the horrors of H.P. Lovecraft back to movie screens. Read More »

Kevin Pollak Offered Role in Kevin Smith’s Red State

Kevin Pollak must have made an impression with his work in Cop Out—the most recent (and least satisfying) of Kevin Smith’s films—because now he’s been offered a part in Red State, Smith’s tale about a group of kids who encounter “a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘extreme fundamentalism.’” Read More »
