Texas 34 at Rice 17

Newton’s 3 TDs lead No. 5 Texas over Rice 34-17
By KRISTIE RIEKEN, AP Sports Writer Sep 4, 8:27 pm EDT

HOUSTON (AP)—Mack Brown insisted this offseason that with Colt McCoy gone, No. 5 Texas would re-establish a running game that had gone stale as the Longhorns leaned on their star quarterback in recent years.

At least for the first game of the post-Colt era, the Longhorns’ coach showed he was serious.

Tre’ Newton ran for three touchdowns and Texas ran twice as much as it passed in Garrett Gilbert’s first games as starting quarterback, a 34-17 victory against Rice on Saturday.

Gilbert, who threw four interceptions filling in for McCoy in the loss to Alabama in the BCS title game, didn’t turn the ball over in this one. Still, his day didn’t go as smoothly as Longhorns fans had hoped.

He finished 14 of 23 for 172 yards. Texas ran 46 times for 197 yards.

Texas was stopped on fourth-and-goal down at the 1 on its first drive and settled for a 51-yard field goal on the second. Gilbert bounced a few passes, but showed pinpoint accuracy on others, including a 47-yard throw to Malcolm Williams in the third quarter.

Brown got a bit snappy when asked if he’d rather run than pass though.

“I am at a point where I would rather win,” he said. “I don’t care. I really don’t. I liked Colt McCoy completing 80 percent of his passes. Some people didn’t. It really bothered them. (They) got emotional, got counseling. I liked it. I liked Garrett completing a bunch of passes tonight.”

Texas finally got going on its first full drive of the second quarter taking a 10-3 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Newton. He ran up the middle and just out of reach of the outstretched arms of two Rice defenders for that score.

That drive was fueled by a 22-yard catch and run by Marquise Goodwin, a play where the Longhorns finally seemed to find a rhythm. The Longhorns gained just 53 yards in the first quarter, but piled up 69 on their first touchdown drive.

“I think there is a lot of things we need to work on, but it is something we can build upon,” Gilbert said.

The defense got involved after Newton’s first score, with Sam Acho sacking Rice freshman Taylor McHargue and causing a fumble. Keenan Robinson scooped it up and returned it for a 10-yard touchdown and Texas had turned a 3-3 tie into a 17-3 lead in less than two minutes.

“There will be an upset today when we start looking at scores from other games across the country, and that scares you to death,” Brown said. “You’re excited to win the opener, and I told the players they ought to be real proud to be 1-0, but there are a lot of things that we can work on.”

Newton, who finished with 61 yards, also had a 2-yard score in the second quarter and a second 1-yard TD in the third.

“There is probably a lot (to work on), but the coaches will let us know tomorrow,” Newton said. “We’ll get to see the mistakes that we made today. We’ll learn from them and we’ll move on.”

Newton lost the starting job to Cody Johnson, but still got plenty of carries. The 250-pound Johnson had trouble early. The Longhorns had a first down at the Rice 4 in the first quarter. Johnson gained a yard on first down and two on second before being stuffed on third and losing four yards on fourth down.

Johnson had 15 carries for 59 yards and Fozzy Whittaker added 51 yards rushing.

“I thought the running game was good, but I didn’t like the short yardage and the two times we didn’t make it,” Brown said. “But we were physical, and we used three backs that all made yards.”

Rice’s first touchdown came on a fluke play. McHargue’s pass bounced off the hands of Vance McDonald and right into the arms of Randy Kitchens. Kitchens had a step on Christian Scott, but Scott grabbed his leg and hung on as Kitchens dragged him to the goal line for the 47-yard score which made it 24-10 just before halftime.

“You get lucky every now and then,” McHargue said. “Really that’s it.”

Rice coach David Bailiff was pleased with McHargue’s debut.

“He did some great things and he did some freshman quarterback things,” Bailiff said. “He’s got four more years to continue to grow and we really think he’s going to be something special.”

Rice’s Sam McGuffie had 14 carries for 47 yards in his Rice debut after sitting out for a year after transferring from Michigan. McHargue was 6 of 11 for 90 yards and an interception.

“Overall this is a game that we can look at and build on and improve,” Bailiff said.

Texas opened away from home for the first time since 1995 at Hawaii. But this could hardly be called an away game with the overwhelming majority of the crowd of 70,445 at Reliant Stadium, home of the NFL’s Houston Texans, clad in burnt orange and rooting for the Longhorns.

McCoy’s younger brother Case McCoy took over at quarterback with about six minutes remaining. He attempted one pass.

Use Whaley and Shead at running back before we lose them. Can the Horns find a kicker to kick it into the end zone?

Rices' touchdowns were flukes! Lucky plays. Anybody who watched the game saw it. Texas' defense wull be fine, but that offense needs to pick it up.

If Texas plays like this in two weeks, it's going to be a long night for the Longhorns. Taylor Potts will have field day against that inexperienced secondary. Gilbert better hit the weight room, several throws fell quite short of the intended target. Get ready for some pick sixes this year when he goes deep on the right side of the field.

Sorry eggman, but be real Gilbert was 14 for 24, and Newton was 18 for 61, Johnson was 15 for 59. Other backs few...Total. offense 359 yrds. Rice stopped Johnson twice on 3rd. and goal. Texas played Rice!! Should have won by 40 points. Mack did the samething to Vince, and it didn't work, and this offense will not work this time. For this offense to work you must have a great RB like Alabama has, or a Earl C. Gilbert can be great if Mack lets him. My question to you, why would Mack want to change his offense this year? It has worked good the last 5 seasons? Texas could loss 4 or 5 games this season.

    Sorry Larry. I disagree.
How can you say that there was no running game? The Horns rushed for 172 years and 3 tds!!!
They ran all over Rice. The Horns had pretty good balance. Colt is gone. 300 yard passing days are over. We have a pro style offense which is better overall than the spread in my opinion. We all need to deal with it.
359 yards = flat offense? Sorry, I disagree.
Yes, Gilbert ran the offense. However, our team's personal makes the prostyle offense a better fit. Garrett is adapting it very well. Since no NFL team runs a straight spread offense, the pro style will help Garrett prepare for the NFL.
You are correct about the special teams though. That needs to be fixed this week.
The horns will probably not go undefeated, and yes they may struggle. But, they looked good yesterday.

The Longhorns will be fine...If you want to base first week performances as a strong indicator on the seaons long performance, you don't know much about football. This is a new offensive scheme, barely tested QB, new receivers...lots to get use to. What I saw was signs for a good year ahead; especially on defense. Maybe not #1 in the nation, but definitely strong enough to win the Big 12. Oklahoma nearly lost to Utah State at home...their defense was nowhere; and Nebraska's run defense without Suh had as many holes as swiss cheese. Both these teams will improve in the coming weeks as well, but a clear cut leader in the Big 12 did not show it's face in week 1.

Hang in their Longhorn Fans...the team will surprise this year

I really am a Texas fan, but what I saw really surprised me. Special teams played very bad. Defense played a good game. Missing field goals for a Texas team just isn't heard of until the game Sat. Offense looked flat. Gilbert was 14 for 24= 172 yrds. Newton 18 for 61 yrds. Johnson 15 for 59 yrds.
Total offense 359 yrds. So if you look at the whole picture Newton wasn't any better than Johnson. Same old story, same tune....no running game, just like last year. Mack Brown is trying to make Gilbert learn a whole NEW offense. Gibert was a great QB in HIgh School, and now Mack Brown, and Davis wants to change him. Mack better change his so called smash running offense. Mack tried to do the same thing with Vince Young, and it didn,t work. Texas should have beat Rice by 40 points, and they didn't . The game could have been differant if it wasn't for some good plays by the defense. Sorry Mack, but you might have a long season this year..........IF! No you will not be NO. 1 this year.

Anybody who bases Texas season on their performance in this one game is an idiot. All teams struggle to one degree or another in their first game of the season, because it's no longer drills and practices. So Texas did some good things and has work to do on others. Welcome to college football. Underestimating this team is a stupid move and the sign of an unknowledgeable football lunkhead.

Anyone who thinks UT sucks is an idiot....You know why we only won by 17?
because for the last quarter our starters were out...What were Floridas starters doing in the 4th?
Oh yeah, making sure they didnt lose the game....
And im happy with the way UT played...they have a bunch of freshman yet played like they played college ball before.....
I mean we didnt have 3 fumbles, and only 23 yrds going into the 4th...so you should be scared!

I'm happy with the win, but the mistakes we made against Rice will cost us against good teams. Liked the running game and offensive game plan that protected Gilbert, but the defense dropped a couple picks, we let up a flukey TD before the half and we booted that punt at the end that allowed Rice to get a late TD to make it look respectable. One game though, lets just focus on Wyoming next week and get on our A-game for conference play. Hook em Horns!

Texas fans saying this is a good showing when you only beat Rice by 17 points. That is laughable. UH beat them by over 40 last year. UT has a hard row to hoe if this is the best they have. So much for the I never went to college but I am a UT fans at Reliant stadium. They will be Alabama fans before the season is over.

Good first week effort, Longhorns. Score could have been 51-3 if the defense had held on to the 2 interceptions for TDs, Longhorns hadn't screwed up the goal line stance, and the 2 breaks that went Rice's way for TDs hadn't happened. Doesn't matter...it was a great tune-up and a sign of better things to come...Hook'em Horns.

It's a transistion and new look for Texas - I think Rice gave an excellent effort - a win is a win - identify the problem areas - applaud the good areas and move on - it will be an interesting year for the horns. How good they may be - to be determined !

Solid opener. Texas did nothing spectacular, just lined up and ran the ball straight up the gut and played a very vanilla defensive scheme. As has been the case in recent years, we won't know a thing about Texas until they play their first conference opponent and still won't know how good they are until they face OU. It was a decent, if unspectacular start to the season.
