There are some very interesting quarterback matchups in Week 1 of the NFL season, starting with Thursday night in the NFC title game rematch as Drew Brees takes on Brett Favre. Peyton Manning and Matt Schaub have had fun battles in the past, as have Tony Romo and Donovan McNabb, and Carson Palmer and Tom Brady. Kevin Kolb hosting Aaron Rodgers is another intriguing matchup, with Kolb trying to mimic Rodgers and thrive after replacing a legend.

From a fantasy aspect, oddly enough, one of the most interesting matchups to me will occur at Soldier Field, as beleaguered, under-the-microscope, interception machine Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears takes on Detroit Lions sophomore Matthew Stafford. Just think about it: We know what Brees, Favre, Manning and all those other guys are capable of. Sure, to some McNabb in D.C. is problematic, and the official start of the Kolb era in Philly could go in many directions, but I feel pretty confident how those fellows will perform. With Cutler and Stafford, there's so much on the line, and huge possibilities.

To see what Eric thinks Jay Cutler and Matthew Stafford will do in Week 1 and the rest of this season, you must be an ESPN Insider.
