Council rejects Seaford Heights plan

PLANS to build a 1130-house development on farmland in Seaford Heights have been rejected by Onkaparinga Council.

Members agreed there were too many flaws with the current plans - including a lack of native buffer zones and access to public transport - at last night’s council meeting.

The council will instead write to Planning Minister Paul Holloway asking him to rethink the development and zone the land rural for agriculture or viticulture.

The development, proposed by the Fairmont Group for a 77ha site between Victor Harbor and Main South roads, has angered the local wine and tourism industry, which says it will spoil the rural character of the region and deter tourists.

McLaren Vale Grape, Wine and Tourism chairman Dudley Brown said Seaford Heights was where suburbia faded away and the holiday experience of the Fleurieu Peninsula began.

He said the site had 650 million year old geology, which could be used to produce a unique flavoured wine.

Hmm! What if I said I hate the sight of featureless padocks and monoculture agriculture offends me! Would I just be wrong?

He should also get his facts straight about the soil and the $ value of the McLaren Vale wine industry. Last I heard the indusrty was worth a squllion dollars and the Seaford Heights paddock was the best soil in the whole world for growing grapes. Try selling a vineyard in MV and you'll find out the state of the local wine industry.

Dudley Brown should get his facts right..about where suburbia is fading. The people of the south have suburbia throughout Aldinga, Seaford, Maslin Beach, Noarlunga, Sellicks Beach, Willunga, Mclaren Vale, Mclaren Flat, Willunga and the Fleurieu Peninsula actually begins at the top of Willunga Hill and not at Seaford Heights.
