Angels & Demons: Guilty Pleasure

Angels & demons44390931

Most studio movies aim at your pleasure center; they're not trying to challenge your brain. But Ron Howard, like Steven Spielberg, is that rare studio hybrid--the quality/commercial filmmaker who likes to turn out both mass-audience blockbusters and Oscar contenders.

Rarely the twain shall meet, as Howard learned the hard way three years ago when, seeking film fest validation, he and his producing partner Brian Grazer made the mistake of opening Cannes with The Da Vinci Code, adapted from Dan Brown's bestseller. The Sony brass took the train down from Paris, only to see the global press corps take a dump on the movie--before it went on to earn $757 million worldwide. Clearly the follow-up Angels & Demons doesn't need a festival boost before it hits theaters May 15. (Here's Todd McCarthy's review.)

Howard promised me that this one was more fun than the first. They were hampered in that case by having to step gingerly around some of the book's serious Christian subject matter. (Figuring out how to dress Hanks' virginal sidekick Audrey Tautou was a nightmare.) This time, Howard and his writers, David Koepp and Akiva Goldsman, pull out the stops for a rollicking, over-scale, implausibly good time.

Don't get me wrong. Angels & Demons is in many ways a terrible movie. Tom Hanks deserves every dollar he got paid for keeping a straight face as he spews out reams of clunky expository dialogue, often at top speed on the run. But I was expertly manipulated, first by the scary possibilities of explosive anti-matter created before our eyes by super-colliders--and then stolen. Next, there's a dead Pope. Was he killed? And four kidnapped and threatened preferiti. Is it the Illuminati? The mystery must be solved before the anti-matter explodes. And the race against time is on.

Going behind the scenes of the Vatican during Conclave is cool, like movies about presidents in the Oval Office, or The Queen. These are secret places where great decisions are made--requiring scads of computer graphics. As Stellan Skarsgard and Armin Mueller-Stahl try to impede stalwart academic sleuth Robert Langdon (Hanks), Ewan McGregor is more helpful as the Vatican's Camerlengo (at one point that word made people in my screening giggle).

When my date and I tried to piece the plot together afterwards we gave up. This entertaining summer popcorn movie is so bad it's good. Or at least a guilty pleasure.

Here's the trailer:

Time's 100 Influentials: Entertainment

A_r_rahman

This year, Time asked other "influentials" to write up their top 100 selections of the World's Most Influential People. That way we get filmmaker Peter Jackson profiling his Heavenly Creatures discovery, this year's best actress Oscar winner Kate Winslet; Roger Ebert pays tribute to documentarian Werner Herzog; best supporting actress Oscar-winner Penelope Cruz lands praise from Elegy co-star and fellow Oscar-winner Sir Ben Kingsley; Claire Danes does the honors for Zac Efron; Alec Baldwin does his 30 Rock writer-director-co-star Tina Fey; You've Got Mail's Meg Ryan likes Tom Hanks; and Padma Lakshmi hearts Slumdog Millionaire Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman. Leonardo DiCaprio jumps the entertainment side to write up environmentalist Van Jones; Arnold Schwarzenegger praises Democrat and uncle-in-law Edward Kennedy; and Oprah Winfrey fusses over Michelle Obama. (My fave wrap-up of President Barack Obama's first 100 days is on Slate: his "Facebook page.")

UPDATE: Michael Moore addresses the Bernie Madoff question.

Roberts Hearts Hanks, Expletives Included

Julia-Roberts-4753a21a798d

Forget the Supreme Court rebuke of Bono; Julia Roberts was no-holds barred this week at the Film Society of Lincoln Center gala tribute to Tom Hanks. After Hanks came through for Roberts when she was feted by the American Cinematheque in 2007, she returned the favor this week, without restraint:

First Look: Hanks in Angels & Demons

AngelsxUSA Today has a first look at Tom Hanks in the Da Vinci Code sequel, Angels & Demons. They got rid of Hanks' hairstyle, thankfully. The filmmakers are promising that all around, this movie is better than the first one. It better be.

Charlie Wilson's War: Early Review

Charlieww_lI couldn't make any of the Charlie Wilson's War, Golden Compass or Sweeney Todd screenings this week due to various scheduling conflicts. Safe to say early reactions are more positive for Sweeney, especially for Depp, than Charlie's, although Variety's Todd McCarthy is in the same camp as Time's Richard Corliss: Charlie is fun for adults. Philip Seymour Hoffman seems to be the film's serious Oscar contender, along with writer Aaron Sorkin. Here's McCarthy's nut graph:

"Charlie Wilson's War" is that rare Hollywood commodity these days: a smart, sophisticated entertainment for grownups. Based on the late George Crile's sensational bestseller about how an unlikely trio of influential and colorful characters conspired to generate covert financial and weapons support for the Afghan Mujahideen to defeat the Russians in the 1980s -- and armed America's future enemies in the process -- Mike Nichols' film is snappy, amusing and ruefully ironic. But not even the stellar talent on both sides of the camera may be enough to make these qualities alluring to general audiences or those much under 40, making B.O. prospects a mid-range thing.

Julia Roberts Awarded at American Cinematheque Ball; Charlie Wilson's War Trailer

20071013juliarobertshonoredAt Friday night's 22nd annual American Cinematheque Ball at the Beverly Hilton (which AMC will air December 5), honoree Julia Roberts sat with director Mike Nichols, husband Danny Moder, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Leslee Dart, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Kevin Huvane of CAA. "It's hard to think when my dress is this snug," said Roberts after accepting the award from Pelican Brief co-star Denzel Washington. "More than anything, I am just the most proud wife and mother of the three most amazing children and that is all I could ever ask for. And the widening of my life and my hips is the true gift of my husband Danny, who I'd just be so lonely without."

Hanks started out the night on a high note by delivering hilarious advice for fellow Roberts co-stars. Remember Q.U.A.K.E., he said: Q is for Question. Everyone always asks what it's like to work with Julia Roberts. Answer: "She's the boilerplate, the gold standard," he said. U is for being Upstaged: "As when another actor steals your focus; you might well be a waffle iron sitting in a tree; no one is looking at you." A is for the Asterisk that will appear after your name: as, "appeared with Julia Roberts in film blank." K is for Knowledge: "No matter how good shape you're in, Julia Roberts is going home to a husband who is way better looking than you." E is for Everybody: "Everybody loves Julia Roberts, absolutely everybody."

Richard Gere, David Letterman and George Clooney sent clips. (Clooney is shooting the Coens' Burn After Reading in NYC. His clip was shot in a men's room; he looks down when a man's foot nudges his. When he looks into the next stall, he sees Brad Pitt.) Folks who actually showed up and delivered good tribute were Hanks, Marcia Gay Harden, Garry Marshall, Mike Nichols, Natalie Portman and fellow southerner Shirley MacLaine, who admired Roberts' "emotional discipline and control" as a young actress in Steel Magnolias as well as her eyebrows: "They changed with every picture," she said. "The most important journey you'll ever take is with yourself."

Others who did the usual same-old same-old were Sally Field, Dermot Mulroney, Blair Underwood, Bruce Willis and presenter Denzel Washington, her co-star in Pelican Brief. (There was no sign of Steven Soderbergh.) Top studio brass from Universal, Fox, Disney, Paramount and Paramount Vantage were in the house.

I saw some more of Charlie Wilson's War (the trailer makes the Mike Nichols comedy look funny; it's written by Aaron Sorkin) at the Ball. The clip showed Roberts, as a Texas billionaire, and Hanks, as a Texas congressman, in a luxurious bathroom, presumably post-sex, as he takes a bubble bath and she explains (while shoveling on mascara to rival Tammy Faye Bakker) why he has to wage war against the Soviets in Afghanistan. It was a funny bit but I need to see the whole movie. As for the clip for Fireflies in the Garden, in which Roberts fiercely emoted opposite philandering husband Willem Dafoe, I really need to see the whole movie.

First Look: E.T. does Charlie Wilson's War

Charlieww_lOne of the last movies to break in this year's list of Oscar wannabes--it's certainly the one I know least about-- is Mike Nichols' Charlie Wilson's War, which looks to be a comic-toned black comedy based on a true story about a boozing womanizing Texas Congressman's 80s rush to arm the Afghan tribes in their fight against the Soviets. E.T. is promising a first look Tuesday. This footage showcases star Tom Hanks in a hot tub, plus a blonde Julia Roberts in a bikini--I suspect that the marketing of this film will avoid the pic's political content in favor of its two stars. Here's E.W.'s fall preview.

Charlie Wilson's War offers yet another (supporting) role for Philip Seymour Hoffman, who gives strong lead perfs in Tamara Jenkins' The Savages as well as Sidney Lumet's Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.
