Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

A lot of people for years have envisioned stern, white-gloved men marching into Heritage Hall to confiscate Reggie Bush's tainted 2005 Heisman Trophy in the name of justice and compliance and not being relentlessly hyped by ESPN ahead of a loss in the '06 Rose Bowl. With the university's decision in July to forfeit its copy of the award, though – along with all other evidence of Bush's existence there – it didn't come to that at USC.

And despite speculation last week that the Heisman Trust was prepared to move on Bush's trophy, it won't go down that way for him, either, after Bush announced his decision Tuesday to become the first player in the award's 75-year history to give the trophy back. In a statement released by the Saints, Bush said:

One of the greatest honors of my life was winning the Heisman Trophy in 2005. For me, it was a dream come true.

But I know that the Heisman is not mine alone. Far from it. I know that my victory was made possible by the discipline and hard work of my teammates, the steady guidance of my coaches, the inspiration of the fans, and the unconditional love of my family and friends. And I know that any young man fortunate enough to win the Heisman enters into a family of sorts. Each individual carries the legacy of the award and each one is entrusted with its good name.

It is for these reasons that I have made the difficult decision to forfeit my title as Heisman winner of 2005. The persistent media speculation regarding allegations dating back to my years at USC has been both painful and distracting. In no way should the storm around these allegations reflect in any way on the dignity of this award, nor on any other institutions or individuals. Nor should it distract from outstanding performances and hard-earned achievements either in the past, present or future.

For the rest of my days, I will continue to strive to demonstrate through my actions and words that I was deserving of the confidence placed in me by the Heisman Trophy Trust. [...]

I will forever appreciate the honor bestowed upon me as a winner of the Heisman. While this decision is heart-breaking, I find solace in knowing that the award was made possible by the support and love of so many. Those are gifts that can never be taken away."

On the bright side, his production with the New Orleans Saints should increase dramatically with the burden of the Heisman Curse now lifted.

Bush also said he would work to turn "a negative situation into a positive one" by working with the trust to set up "an educational program which will assist student-athletes and their families avoid some of the mistakes that I made." That may not amount to an admission of guilt, exactly, much less an apology, but it's probably as close as we're ever going to get – at least until some documentary or author finally drags Bush's side of the story out of him in 20 years, after everyone has mostly stopped caring.

I wish I could say the obligatory retrospectives are the last we're going to hear from this affair, more than 4 1/2 years after Bush and his parents were initially accused of negotiating a lucrative arrangement with a pair of would-be agents over his last two seasons in school. But we still await the fate of USC's pending appeal to remove the safe the NCAA dropped on the football program as a result, and of the Trojans' 2004 BCS championship, which will almost certainly be stripped unless the NCAA (improbably) overturns its decision to declare Bush retroactively ineligible for the 2005 Orange Bowl rout over Oklahoma.

And there's the matter of what happens to his soon-to-be-vacant Heisman itself. It's not like runner-up Vince Young is asking for it or anything, but if they're willing to give it to him, you know, he wouldn't say no.

LOL ESPN! After making fun of the Texans for taking Mario Williams, looks like the Texans have the last laugh after all!

I've always been curious...did the would be agents actually become his agents? Because if not they got shafted as well.

Bush's performance on the field had nothing to do with what happened off the field. He is in the pros and regardless of what he did off the field he would have made it anyways. Accepting money and benefits doesn't make you a better athlete. Bush isn't the first, and won't be the last athlete to receive improper benefits and sure won't be the last to go pro after getting those benefits.

    @MichaelB
Bush ended up ditching the would-be agents, who then sued him for breech of contract. Bush ended up settling with both of them out of court shortly before things went to trial, which would have cracked this whole mess years ago.

The agents did not become his agents. The whole thing blew up because Mr. Bush reneged on agreements with two agents with whom he had signed contracts. They each sued him separately in California civil courts to get their money back.

Bush never signed contracts with them, a small point of correction.

I think as a great gesture that Reggie should pick up the scholarships that USC lost and pay for them so that the school doesn't lose players or players end up in the same situation that got Reggie in trouble in the first place. it's a sad day for the Heisman history but he knew the rules.

Reggie makes a good move and would have both the Heisman and a Super Bowl ring. I give him credit for manning up to his mistake. I still don't like the Saints and I feel that most of the fans that they have accrued in the last two years are two year old fans because prior to the last few years the Saints used to suck. Unless they were all hiding in the closet or living under a rock and/or cave???????

    Leon:
    1) No players were losing scholarships. They just can't hand out as many in the future and bush can't change that.
    2) Not much of a gesture. He is just trying to boost his image for marketing purposes. This is like breaking the neighbors window and applogizing while your dad is holding you by the scruff of the neck. He doesn't have an option.
    3) It's actually a good day for the Heisman. It was a sad to see a cheater get the award and that is being made right.

Yo Luis M Pats you are a dick! No one cares if you don't like the Saints. What does that have to do with what Reggie Bush did as an collegiate player for a a team I hate (USC). It's pretty obvious that place is ripe with this sort of allowing of the bending/breaking the rules to get players like this (football & basketball). Believe me that most Saints fans have been Saints fans for a good while...even in the early to mid 90's when we also had good teams (defense), so suck on it brah because your a jealous gay! Most fans also realize that R. Bush is actually learning how to run up the field which only makes him as good as the 4 or 5 other good RB's the saints have otherwise we would have traded him a long time ago.

I think Pete Carroll should give his NFL job back...think about it, Reggie Bush and USC made his career allowing him a second chance in the NFL, is that fair? If the trojans are a horrible team no NFL team looks at Carroll.

Reggie Bush was able to draw out the best of this situation, in light of his thoughtful reaction, he will always remain the Heisman trophy winner of 05 in the eyes of his fans and supporters. NCAA handled this wrong as they should have went after the institutions instead of the kids trying to find their place in society. We have to take into account that these college players are kids.

Now that bush has given back his heisman, when will USC give back all the money it made off Bush jersey sells and other memorabilla? I don't see USC President and Pat Haden running to the podium saying they're giving back the money. Shouldn't that be part of the cleansing of Bush?
