Introduction to PFR
My name is Doug Drinen. I am a mathematician and a sports fan, so it shouldn't surprise you to learn that I am obsessed with football data. I collect it like some people collect stamps. I've been doing that for years now and the result was, up until now, an extensive but extremely unorganized collection of dozens of files spread across a few different computers and not connected in any way. Recently, I decided to organize it and make it available for public consumption. The result is pro-football-reference.com, which I believe is the most complete and most organized collection of football data on the web.What is here?
- Player pages containing career statistics
for nearly every player in pro football history.
- For more recent players, there is a game-by-game log of their stats,
going back to 1995. Check out Isaac
Bruce.
- Standings for each season back to the
beginning of what is now the NFL in 1920.
Revisit 1951, for example. For years
1983 and later, you can link from the standings page to a page of
teams stats (what team led the
NFL in yards per rush in 1994?)
and for years 1970 and later, a list of league leaders in some of the major
categories
(find out what WR had the highest yards
per catch average in 1992).
- For each current franchise, a page listing its all-time record and individual pages for each season. Check out the 1984 Redskins.
