Eva Longoria Parker as Marvel’s Wasp? She likes the buzz: ‘It’s a fantastic rumor’

Eva Longoria-Parker
Gerrick Kennedy has a dispatch from the set of “Desperate Housewives” that will be of interest to the fanboy nation… Marvel Studios introduced “The Avengers” at Comic-Con International in San Diego with a big crowd of stars on stage, but that wasn’t everybody who will be in the Marvel universe. For one thing, there were seven male actors on stage and just one lone woman, Scarlett Johansson, who plays the Black Widow. Who will portray the Wasp, a founding member of the superhero team that debuted back in 1963? (If not in the “Avengers” film than in “Ant-Man,” which is by all claims still moving forward?) One rumor that’s been making the rounds for months is that Eva Longoria Parker, she of “Desperate Housewives” fame, is a strong candidate, and on Tuesday, on the set of the soapy ABC series, she did nothing to dissuade ...

COMIC-CON 2010: Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams. ‘Nuff said.

Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams
There may not be two bigger heroes for many of the Comic-Con faithful than Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams. The mood was set for most of the crowd as songs from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s” musical episode and “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”played over the Hall H loudspeakers. The announcer rattled off a list of the duo’s separate accomplishments, each cheered to varying degrees, but the loudest roar came when Whedon and Abrams walked out to a packed house as part of Entertainment Weekly’s Visionaries series, answering a variety of questions from the audience and from moderator Jeff “Doc” Jensen. A question about influential props led Abrams into a talk about receiving a tongue prop from “The Exorcist” in a box as a gift. Whedon said that he couldn’t top that. “I do have an alien egg, but I had to bury the franchise ...

It’s official: ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America’ will be 3-D films

EXCLUSIVE FIRST-LOOK PHOTO: THE GODS OF”THOR” It’s official: The hammer of Thor and the shield of Captain America will fly straight at moviegoers in 3-D, which is really no surprise considering the current stereoscopic craze on the studios lots of Hollywood. What is unusual is the eagerness of each film’s director to take his case for 3-D directly to the fans at Comic-Con International.‬‪ On Saturday, July 24, Marvel Studios has the final studio presentation in the expo’s biggest room, Hall H, and “Thor” director Kenneth Branagh will use that climactic slot not just to introduce some of his cast — a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins, but it’s unlikely that all three will be in San Diego — but also to persuade skeptical fans that 3-D will add new dimensions to the 2011 blockbuster, and not just in ...

COMIC-CON 2010: J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon, together at Comic-Con? It’s Nerdvana!

COMIC-CON 2010 This Thursday, the first-day schedule for Comic-Con International will be announced, but already all over Los Angeles, studio insiders are playing a game of “show me yours and I’ll show you mine” with their programming plans for film and television. One of the interesting tidbits we keep hearing about is the rumor that Entertainment Weekly is hosting a two-man panel that must come close to the elusive state known as Nerdvana: J. J. Abrams and Joss Whedon! – Geoff Boucher RECENT AND RELATED J.J. Abrams, the Hero Complex interview Abrams and Orci talk ‘Trek’ sequel and terrorism theme John Noble: “Walter is like a King Lear for television” ON THE SET: “Fringe” looks for its own identity Nimoy on “Fringe”: ‘I never paid much attention until …’ ‘Trek,’ ‘Fringe,’ ‘Transformers’ trifecta for Orci & Kurtzman

‘Avengers’ talk, comic book signings: It’s Whedon weekend (actually, when is it not?)

Two Joss Whedon-related events, neither actually involving Joss, are slated for tonight and tomorrow at Golden Apple Comics. But we’ll get to that. First, there’s “Avengers” talk afoot. It could have been an April Fool’s Day prank … Joss Whedon’s name popping up as the possible director of Marvel’s long-in-the-planning “Avengers” movie. But then it was on MTV, and Flickcast did a little digging, and Screen Rant, with many following IESB — who did their best to make it sound real amidst other April Fool’s Day hoaxes. Could this be? After some checking, insiders at Marvel Studios say no director has been signed yet but that Whedon was on the short-list and conversations took place. This could be promising, Whedonites. If you want to harass some people close to him about it, there’s ample opportunity this weekend. “Dr. Horrible” (and ...

Neal Adams: The future is now for motion comics

GUEST ESSAY Who is the greatest living comic-book artist? Neal Adams gets my vote. His work for DC Comics in the 1960s and ’70s still stands as a towering achievement, and he drew the perfect Bruce Wayne, the definitive Green Lantern and the most memorable Green Arrow. Adams remains a dynamic figure in the world of illustration (check out Adams’ website if you haven’t already), and his new passion is for motion comics, as he writes in this guest essay for Hero Complex.  – Geoff Boucher New York, Union Square, 14th street, October 28th. It’s not every day that a new medium is invented or created and usually it happens by accident, against the tide and is roundly ignored and criticized by the majority of the population. You want to put sound with movies? Talkies?! A flash-in-the-pan! Comic books?  That’s not a ...

Comic-Con video: Joss Whedon, Eliza Dushku talk ‘Dollhouse’

If you sit in on a Joss Whedon panel, you’re sure to be entertained. Whedon brought along Faith-ful "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" companion Eliza Dushku and "Battlestar Galactica" captain Tahmoh Penikett to a panel introducing the world to "Dollhouse," which is set to debut in early 2009 on Fox. The character, Echo, who can have personalities imprinted on her to be whatever/whoever the mysterious agency known as ‘the Dollhouse’ needs, is based in part on the craziness and the randomness of Dushku’s own life. "Some of the things I might bring [to the part] are feist, fun and fury," says a pumped Dushku.  She was elk hunting when he wrote the pilot ("Sorry PETA, it’s part of life") and defers everything to Joss, and supportingly describes him as a "career brassiere" who "makes the words party on the page." Tahmoh ...
