Captain America Concept Image

Whether or not you’ve ever been on a set, there’s always one universal rule: no photos or videos. And that goes doubly for a film with as much anticipation and buzz at Marvel Studio’s Captain America: The First Avenger starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving and directed by Joe Johnston. Well, rules are meant to be broken. A few months ago, several concept images were leaked followed by some photos of Evans’s stunt double in the suit and now several websites have popped up with an huge number of set photos from Manchester, UK, where the film is currently shooting. They even have an almost 6 minute video walking through a completely dressed 1940s outdoor location.

Who wants to see Michelle Rodriguez beat up Tim League? Well, it’s probably going to happen at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas this week (which Tuesday announced that 13 Assassins would be its closing night film). Rodriguez vs. League is the main event of the annual Fantastic Debates party, where film journalists and filmmakers debate over an issue, and then get into a boxing ring to really settle the score. In previous years, well known journos such as Devin Faraci, formerly of CHUD, and Scott Weinberg of Cinematical duke it out over such topics as “Does Michael Bay Deserve an Oscar or the Death Penalty?” and “Are Vampires Gay?” In last year’s main event, League famously fought Uwe Boll over the state of independent films.

The topic League and Rodriguez will be debating this year? “Should Avatar have won the Oscar for Best Picture?”

Four People Watch ‘Buried’ While Actually Buried

Doesn’t it feel like Buried should be out by now? The film premiered at Sundance in January and we’ve been featuring posters and trailers for the film seemingly every few weeks. Well, the time is finally here. The film, starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Rodrigo Cortés, opens in limited release this Friday, September 24 and will be having a Gala Screening at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas the night before.

In celebration of that, the Alamo Drafthouse and Fantastic Fest hosted Buried with BURIED: Rolling Roadshow of One. Four lucky (or not so lucky, depending on how you look at it) people were picked to be blindfolded, have a burlap sack put over their head, then silently driven 30 miles outside of the city. There, they were put in coffins and only then were they allowed to remove the blindfolds, where they’d see an LCD screen that would show Buried. They then got to meet Ryan Reynolds after, and probably just ask him Green Lantern questions.

Most excellent. While at the Toronto Film Festival promoting Henry’s Crime, Keanu Reeves once again confirmed that a third Bill & Ted film might be in the works. “We’re trying,” he said. “Alex (Winter) and I are still friends and we’re talking and we’re talking to Chris (Matheson) and Ed (Soloman) and they’re gonna try and see if they can write something.”

I think surely after Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, there’s more story to tell. After the jump, read more of Reeves’ quote and hear what Alex Winter had to say, too. Read More »

After only one episode, HBO has seen to it that Prohibition era Atlantic City is going to see a second season. Boardwalk Empire, executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Mark Wahlberg, Terence Winter and Tim Van Patten premiered Sunday night with 4.8 million viewers (and up to 7.1 million after two repeats). That was the network’s most-watch premiere since Deadwood in 2004, and HBO quickly announced they renewed the show for season two.

Starring Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Kelly Macdonald and Michael Shannon among others, Boardwalk Empire dramatizes life in Atlantic City, NJ in 1920 when Prohibition began in the United States. Buscemi plays “Nucky” Thompson, a local politician who takes advantage of the day to become an organized crime leader.

If you are reading this site and haven’t read Ender’s Game, you should go out and do that right now. Seriously. I mean, it’s a precursor to so many books, video games and movies that we cover it would be futile to try and list them all. Unfortunately, though, this seminal work has always had a tough time finding its legs in Hollywood. But there’s a chance that might be changing.

Ender’s Game, an award winning 1985 sci-fi novel by Orson Scott Card is the story of a a boy nicknamed Ender who, at a very young age, is chosen to go into space for Battle School. Battle School is a place where adults train gifted children to be military leaders for an imminent war using zero gravity war games, interactive digital simulations and a whole bunch of cold-blooded precision and aggression. Wolfgang Petersen was attached to direct a film version for several years before that finally died and now it seems Gavin Hood, the director of Tsotsi and X-Men Origins: Wolverine has rewritten a script that Card himself wrote and is developing the project to direct. Unless there’s a Spider-Man or Evil Dead musical to write about, Broadway really doesn’t come up too much here at /Film. Well, another big time film is getting the song and dance treatment as Catch Me If You Can is now officially coming to Broadway on April 10, 2011 with previews starting March 7, 2011.

Most people know the story of famous con man Frank Abagnale Jr., one of the most successful check forgers in history who also posed as a doctor, lawyer and Pan Am pilot all before his 19th birthday, because it was adapted into a film directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. That movie, not the original book by Abagnale Jr., will be the source material for the show with a book by Terrence McNally (Ragtime) and music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who worked together on Hairspray.
