No. 5 Oregon easily handles Portland State 69-0
By ANNE M. PETERSON, AP Sports Writer Sep 18, 10:54 pm EDT

EUGENE, Ore. (AP)—LaMichael James was disappointed.

Even with a career-high 227 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns in No. 5 Oregon’s easy 69-0 defeat of Portland State, James thought his play lacked something. In fact, he dramatically—OK, maybe overly so—called it “the worst game I’ve ever played in my life.”

“I had a lot of yards, yeah, but I didn’t really play that well,” he said. “I take that on myself.”

Maybe it was because he wasn’t challenged from the start, when he ran untouched for 66 yards into the end zone. James went on to help Oregon amass 528 yards on the ground, surpassing the school record 465 set at Washington in 2007.

It was James’ first game with more than 200 yards, and he did it all before halftime. The Ducks (3-0) sat most of their starters after the first half to give the reserves some work before Oregon visits Arizona State to open Pac-10 play next weekend.

Darron Thomas completed nine of 18 passes for 140 yards and a career-best four scores in the victory, Oregon’s 11th straight at Autzen Stadium.

With a 72-0 rout of New Mexico in the opener, and a 48-13 victory over Tennessee last weekend, Oregon has outscored its opponents 189-13 in nonconference play. It is the first time the Ducks have had two shutouts in a season since 1964.

“The first team wanted to come out and put up some good points to let the second team go,” Thomas said. “We did a good job, we put some points on the board.”

The Vikings (2-1) of the FCS Big Sky Conference got as close as the Oregon 13 in the fourth quarter but the Ducks stopped them on fourth-and-1.

The Vikings also got close enough in the first half to give Zach Brown a 52-yard field goal attempt, but it went wide left in the miserably damp conditions.

“Sometimes they’ve got to learn lessons the hard way,” said Portland State first-year coach Nigel Burton.

Oregon is 4-0 all-time against the Vikings. With Saturday’s loss, Portland State falls to 0-10 against the Pac-10 after a season-opening loss to Arizona State.

The Vikings had no answer James, who had his 11th career game with at least 100 yards rushing.

James rushed for 1,546 yards last season to set a new Pac-10 freshman record. He was kept out of this season’s opener against New Mexico while he served a one-game suspension for offseason misconduct. James pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassment charges after an altercation with his ex-girlfriend.

James returned last weekend in Oregon’s 48-13 victory at Tennessee, rushing for 134 yards and a score. In two games this season, he has gained 361 yards.

But yet he said he felt he lacked energy.

“I wasn’t the same guy that I was last week,” he said. “I got to fix that.”

Fellow sophomore Thomas also continued his development after taking over as Oregon’s starter this season. Thomas and fifth-year senior Nate Costa competed for the job in fall camp after last season’ starter, Jeremiah Masoli, was dismissed in the offseason.

Thomas has shown he can scramble in coach Chip Kelly’s spread offense, and some have even compared him to former Duck Dennis Dixon. Against the Vikings he gained 50 yards.

Conner Kavanaugh completed 8 of 21 passes for 18 yards in the Vikings’ new pistol offense, where the running back lines up behind the quarterback. Portland State had just 140 yards total offense compared to Oregon’s 668.

Burton took over this season at Portland State from Jerry Glanville, who was popular with players and fans alike but largely unable to help his team win. Portland State went 9-24 in three seasons under the gregarious former NFL coach.

The Vikings are 2-27 against Football Bowl Subdivision teams, defeating New Mexico 17-6 in 2006 and Hawaii 45-20 in 2000.

Burton said he wasn’t quite sure to feel about the loss.

“Ask me about it in 24 hours, because that’s something I never expected to see, that scoreboard,” he said.

Oregon reported that three players left the game with muscle strains: backup running back Kenjon Barner, tight end David Paulson and left tackle Darrion Weems. The Ducks were not specific about the injuries to the three starters, but it did not appear that any were serious.

I am pretty excited about this season.........but next season......Oregons OOC schedule will include LSU in Dallas, @ Utah and Nevada in Eugene. That will be 2 ranked teams in the first 2 games. If Nevada ends up ranked at the end of the seasons (only loss will be @ BSU) and gets preseason ranking then Uof O will be the only team to play 3 ranked OOC games If the Ducks have no other legal issues between now and next year the west coast haters will be back to writing articles about the oh so ugly uniforms that all the out of state recruits seem to love instead of the Tenn Titans running back or Ol Miss QB or weak OOC.........TROLLERS FIRE AWAY>>>>>> It's not gonna make the Ducks play worse and it's not going to make your team play betterand and it's definately not going to change a @#$% thing about this mans addiction to Quack!!!!!!!
    WIN THE DAY!!!!

Ok...before you say I'm a loser and don't have a life....I have 2 broken toes so I'm not out and doing things like normal. I watched about 15 hours of football yesterday and alot of games the first two weeks. Is it me or when I watch Duck RB's and punt returners they seem really fast. I watch some of these other ranked teams and I'm waiting....and waiting....make a sandwich....10 yards......go to the bathroom....20 yards. Alot(not all) seem extremely slow.

    Kamms,

Arizona looked tough last night and so did ASU. ASU got a few bad calls it looked like and they could not close the deal. There tougher than I thought. I will be at the ASU game and you ? Or are you still away ?
Ducks are tough and have a ton of depth. We just need to stay healthy and keep on doing what were doing.
Nice to have a defense for a change and not have to rely on scoring so many points.

Owen is clearly one of those bone heads that can't do math. Boise struggles to beat Virginia Tech. Then Vigina tech loses to george mason. George Mason is like a junior college team. Boise only has 1 strong team on there schedule--the Beavs. TCU only has 1 tough game as well--Utah. The Pac has 5 solid ranked teams and Oregon will pass both Tcu and the SMURF TEAM team in the rankings in the next few weeks even if TCU and Boise stay un beaten. Not to difficult to figure out the formula unless your a patato head.

Gervin,,,PAC 10 Teams DO NOT have to schedule Sub Division Teams, Portland State was a last minute add on because Cent.Mich. backed out of the contract and they are an FBS School.

    Duck-Time,

You are 100% correct. The only top 25 team that TCU plays is Utah and the only top 25 team that Boise plays is the Beavs. The Pac-10 has 5 teams in the top 25 and because of strength of schedule the Ducks will pass those 2 schools easily. If either Bama of Ohio st lose then we will be in if we run the board. We will be playing in the big one. Any idiot can figure that out.

When the Ducks scheduled games with New Mexico and Tenn. They were in the middle or close to the top of thier divisions. SEC homers know that they have been playing cupcakes for as long as there has been a SEC. All PAC 10 teams have to play sub-division teams in "pre season" just to get any press at all, because we all know if your not SEC or USC you not worthy of east coast press. Any PAC 10 team could run the table and still my not be #1 if a SEC team runs the table, unless of course it is USC. If Oregon beats up all thier opponents and Bama struggles thu theirs. We would still be #2 or #3. Just no respect for PAC10.

    Owen,

Lets see if you get by Oregon State first. Boise has yet to prove themselves this year. Only tough team on Boise schedule is the Beavs. Pac-10 has 5 teams in the top 25. The way I see it if Oregon wins out then we will be no# 3 because of the weak TCU and Boise cupcake schedules. If Bama or Ohio st lose the Ducks are in for the big dance.

By the way those saying Portland State is a small school have no clue what they are talking about.

They have 24,000 Plus students Oregon State as 21,000 plus Ond Oregon has 22,000 plus.

PSU spends most of their money in support of Domestic terrorism and other courses in national destruction. They are the preeminent source of Training Terrorists from The middle East and hiding them. I am glad UO smeared them.

It was good for UO also They got to play face to face with The clients they will represent in the future.

everyone is talking about how wrong it is that oregon scored 69 points. oregon only played it's starters for the first half. oregon didn't even get any points in the fourth quarter. They had to show up and play for 60 minutes. How else could they try to keep the score down? Head coaches are paid to win games and to get their teams rank as high as possible. The only way he could of made the score closer is to just turn the ball over or some other bad ideas. It is not oregons fault that they had to play portland and oregon did not score nearly as many points as they could. if they left the starters in I bet you would of seen 100 points scored

By the way folks talking about Oregons schedule ought to check their own teams schedule. Lots of Florida Atlantics..FCS teams and known Patsies on them. Texas played at least 4 OOC games against patsies last year then they had conference patsies in Baylor,KSU,KU,A&M,and Mizzou along with Iowa state..The nearly lost to Nebraska(They really did) in conf championship.
Okalahoma has played two of those Non BCS Auto teams this year in Utah State and AFA and struggled. But they beat FLA St handily and Fla state has been playing Patsies. Lets not kill off UO so fast here.

You played Portland State. Go out and play top ranked teams and then you can brag, until then, shut up! Who do you play next week, Eastern Oregon? At least teams like Boise State and TCU try to get tougher teams on their schedule. The problem is, top ranked teams will not return their phone calls. Isn't duck season coming up---I think it is!!!!

People---Portland State is a small school in downtown Portland, Oregon. It doesn't have a big football team. This game was only played because another team was suppose to play Oregon and pulled out. Oregon was sort of sick to run the score up that high, though PSU knew it had no chance what-so-ever. Don't go ga-ga over this game. It means nothing. NOTHING.

Make sure to get your tickets and make the trip down I-5
Your in for a serious beatdown.
Maybe you can keep it close for a quarter to give you hope.
It's going to be a quiet, wet, sobering drive back to Seattle.

Listen---I went to Portland State and if there was ever a mismatch in football teams it would be these two. The Ducks only played PSU because another team pulled out. Portland State cannot compete with a Pac-10 Team. Period. I'm sick that Oregon ran the score up to 69. That is disgusting.

Oregon is not number one in the polls because..They have beaten National Doormat NM big..like everyone else.
A rebuilding SEC doormat in Tn and a lower rung Big Sky FCS team. Come on have a clue here. Your in state rival appears to play a tougher schedule then you. You beat some one other than, Aldridge State, St Marys convent school, Pivnick Tech and milton then come in here and ask the question. Sure you look great against doormats but how are you going to look against a real team? You beat some of those then I am behind ya.

Why isn't Oregon number one in the polls? Why aren't they getting any first place votes? Don't the voters watch the games, or even check the scores? Or is it all based on preseason expectations, instead of what happens on the field?

This is the 2nd time I posted this....I guess the writers/editors don't like that Oregon is #1 in everycatagoty.... Yes UO had an easy OOC. Can anybody tell me in the history of college football(and every school has had a cupcake OOC at some point) has there ever been a team after week 3 been #1 in total Offense, #1 in total Defense, and #1 in Special teams at the same time? I'm not bragging, just currious. I think they will loose #1 on D, but keep #1 on O and special teams through the season.........Go ahead and delete the facts again cuz I'll just cut and paste all day long. Biased @#$%ks
