The Latest Political War: Over URLS

LOS ANGELES (CBS) A recent report from the Coalition Against Domain Name Abuse, or CADNA, a watchdog agency monitoring our online identities, found that only 32 percent of senators and only 22 percent of representatives own their own full names as web domains. According to CADNA President Josh Bourne, that's a surprising number considering how online outreach has become just as critical as offline engagement in the political race.

The report also revealed certain candidates, whose sites had been snagged by their opponents. For instance, if you type BobMenendez.org you're taken to a page owned and operated by Sharon Angle's campaign aimed to give her opponent, Sen. Harry Reid a "September to Remember". While Hillary Clinton did sue to get her domain back in 2005, the act of cybersquatting or sitting on a site in bad faith or to profit in the future is not illegal.

In a segment for Washington Unplugged, I spoke to two candidates who have both been affected by the domain name game. Libertarian, Jim Prindle running for U.S. Congress in Texas bought a bunch of sites around a year ago, including his opponents Sen. Ralph Hall. RalphHall.org now leads to Prindle's site, which he says aims to "maximize the exposure... is ethical and of course legal and within our first amendment rights."

"American Idol": The Digital Experience

(Credit: YouTube.com)
LOS ANGELES (CBS)

Just as "American Idol" finally announced its much-awaited panel, a YouTube "Idol video goes viral...

If you're a fan of the show, you'll love this American Idol Interactive Experience created by The Fine Brothers. It was posted only Tuesday afternoon and already it has over 200,000 views. "The whole 'who will be the judges' craziness that's been happening in the news made us hunker down and figure out how to make an 'Idol' judging game, but wanted to move the needle further," The Fine Brothers told me. "At the end of the first video you are promoted to choose between 6 celebrity judges. After selecting one you are brought to another video that knows which you selected first. You then pick a second judge of the remaining 5, which brings you to another video that knows which 2 you selected, after picking a third judge, the video of them together plays. You can then go back and mix and match, there are 20 combinations in total."

At a news conference Wednesday in Los Angeles, host Ryan Seacrest announced that Season 10 judges will be Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson.

Be Part of The Freakonomics: Movie Experiment

LOS ANGELES (CBS)

The internationally bestselling book "Freakonomics" by Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt is set to hit the big screen on October 1.

Fans, however, can see the film in theaters tonight in 10 select cities across the country and take part in Dubner and Levitt's latest human experiment tonight. Just go to MovieTickets.com and pay what you want for your ticket.

The data will then be collected anonymously at the time of purchase and will be analyzed the authors to identify what factors and circumstances prompt movie-goers to pay more or less. The experiment was inspired from the book itself, in which they analyzed how people interact with a weekly, pay-what-you-want bagel delivery service.

Beware Web Sites That Track You

LOS ANGELES (CBS) Last week police in Nashua, New Hampshire broke up a robbery ring whose thieves reportedly used Facebook to rob 18 homes in the month of August. This brings us back to a heated issue about the concept privacy online with Facebook and other geo-tagging sites being at the forefront of it all.

Sites like OpenBook scour public Facebook pages for keywords. So if you search vacation, you could discover users who have taken some time off and even with a little more research, find out where their vacated home is locate.

ICanStalkU.com takes it one step further by revealing the location of pictures you take online.

PleaseRobMe.com's co-founder, Boy Van Amstel, hopes these types of platforms can "show people that it's very easy to get information from the Internet, especially when you share it yourself and that a lot of people could interpret that information more than you could expect or want them to so you might be inviting people to get your stuff."

Apps like SaveFace on Facebook are trying to ease our online anxiety by automatically setting all of your Facebook privacy controls to friends only and the Anonymizer Software hides your IP address when you surf or post so you remain anonymous and can't be located.

In the end though, as our online and offline lives become more entangled it might just come down to us acquainting ourselves with a new digital social etiquette.

"I think it's very important to use common sense," said Amstel. "Would you stand up in a metro and tell people where you live? Probably not. Would you put it on twitter? It's kind of the same thing. It's easy to stumble on a profile and look through information that's on there."

NOH8 Campaign: The Photographic Protest Against Prop 8

LOS ANGELES (CBS) -- When California Proposition 8 passed during the 2008 elections, celebrity photographer Adam Bouska and his partner Jeff Parshley were participating in rallies and protests in West Hollywood but were still looking for more ways to speak out.

One night, Bouska took a picture of Parshley with duct tape on his mouth and the word "NOH8" drawn on his cheek and uploaded the image to Facebook.

"The symbolization behind the duct tape symbolizes how people's voices weren't being heard," said Bouska. "When the majority has the right to vote on the rights of a minority, the majority will always have the upper hand. There's a lot of problems with that to begin with, so we're raising awareness through imagery for that."
