Monday Night Football returns next week and will dominate cable Mondays for the next 17 weeks or so.  But on Labor Day Monday night, it was college football that dominated.  The game between Boise St. and Virginia Tech was far out in front over everything on cable and broadcast too with a 3.9 adults 18-49 rating and nearly 9.9 million viewers.

When it comes to total viewers,  TNT’s The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles were rolling in them on Monday night, too.  The 18-49 numbers the advertisers covet were also very good too for scripted cable shows (though definitely not a case where  “NBC would kill to have those numbers!”).

The Closer was only up a little bit vs. last week but Rizzoli & Isles rose two tenth with adults 18-49 to a 1.5 rating and over 800,000 viewers to 7.24 million viewers.  The Closer had more viewers with 7.92 million, but the same 1.5 rating with adults 18-49.

However, NBC would kill to have those Boise St.- Virginia Tech numbers.

Also, great numbers for Adventure Time, Regular Show and MAD. They even beat out that Nickelodeon special.

Indeed, maybe ABC too. CBS & FOX would merely threaten to kill for them and hope that was enough to get them!

I guess The Closer and Rizzoli and Isles did well but they were still beaten by Hoarders, American Pickers, WWE Raw, Pawn Stars and Real Housewives of New Jersey. I was under the impression that these two shows were really doing great.

Wow almost 8 million viewers for The Closer. If this were on CBS, I bet it could get at least 15 million viewers.

They are really doing very well for scripted shows on cable (not True Blood great, but neither is anything else). They are not doing as well as Pawn Stars, etc, but it is often reported advertisers pay more to advertise on scripted shows. But then again Pawn Stars costs a lot less to make than The Closer. The simplest answer is all those shows are doing well. I didn’t single out any of the shows you mentioned because with the exception of RAW, we’d already posted their numbers elsewhere.

Kardashians and The Spin Crowd were all new. Surprised E! chose to air new episodes on two consecutive nights, especially since they only started advertising this on Saturday.

I know everyone within a 100 mile radius that I called was zoned completely into the game; I know I didn’t move a muscle until Boise pulled it out, and the vast majority of my friends were hooked as well.

The only “problem” I have with its ratings is the demo. I’ve already mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, but for whatever reason some years ago its demo was higher, even 2.0.

And it’s a shame, because at that time the total viewers were lower. Had the total viewers been like they are now at that time, the demo would have reached even greater numbers.

And it’s too bad, since in my opinion The Closer is a very enjoyable, well-made show, despite being the “same cop drama”.

The Closer and R&I did fantastic as did American Pickers and Pawn Stars. TNT have both a successful partner and potential to The Closer, something they struggled to find for a few years.
