Situated in the central Caroline Islands, the atoll of Etal is a member of the Mortlock Islands group (specifically, the Lower Mortlocks) of southeastern Chuuk State. The atoll lies 6 km north from the large Satawan atoll, 14 km northwest from Lukunor and 245 km southeast from the Chuuk island-barrier reef complex.
Etal Atoll has the outline of a rounded triangle with its base (on the northern side) measuring 5 km across; from base to apex the atoll has a maximum length of 7 km. There are 17 islets in total with a combined land area of 1.9 km²; Etal, the largest island, has an area of 0.97 km². All islets, with the exception of two in the northeast corner are located upon the eastern rim of the atoll.
