A small atoll of western Chuuk State, Pulap is located 220 km west from the outer barrier reefs of Chuuk; its nearest neighbours in the region are the five small islets of Poluwat, located upon the submarine Uranie Bank, 29 km to the southwest.
Pulap covers a total area of around 40 km², measuring 13 km in length (north to south) and up to 6 km across. The atoll rim is sunken for most of its perimeter to an average depth of around 10 m; emergent reefs occur at the northern and southern ends of the atoll as well as at one small section of the western rim. The atoll's emergent reefs are each topped by small vegetated islets (coloured red in the above false-colour image) with a combined land area of 0.8 km².
