Playing With Your Food

in a good way

I came across these clever plates today—Mr Food Face and friends. How brilliant!

That was my first thought, anyway. Then I thought about how this could backfire, images of the toddler crying because he doesn’t want to eat Mr. Food Face’s carrot-stick moustache or broccoli side-burns. Would this be too traumatic?

It’s worth the risk. I can absolutely see myself getting into the most creative of food... READ MORE

Egg Recall

Have you checked yours?

I’m sure many of you have seen this already, but in case you haven’t: a new outbreak of salmonella poisoning has led to an egg recall.

The FDA has details about it here.

Filling Buckets

and mouths - with delicious blueberries

We go apple-picking in the fall, and when I was a kid my family went cherry-picking every summer as well.

But I’d never been blueberry picking before, until last week.

Blueberries for Sal was one of my favorite books at a little girl. Do you know it? Little Sal and her mother go blueberry picking on a hill in rural Maine, and get “all mixed up” with a mother bear and her cub. It all ends well, of... READ MORE

Bring on the Calories!

I can't say no to you, milkshake.

Yesterday, I realized that six out of my last ten posts here have been food-related. I am a breastfeeding mother, can you tell?

Isabel is coming up on four months, and the nursing is going great. I am excited, because I haven’t made it this far with breastfeeding since baby no. 3. For a variety of reasons, I was not able to nurse boy no. 4 or no. 5 past the four-month mark which meant that I needed... READ MORE

Lunchtime Innovation

A sandwich in a can: what do you think?

Have you seen this?

From an MSNBC article about the Candwich: “the reaction [the inventor] typically gets the first time people hear about his invention: ‘Ewwwwwwww.’”

I can fully relate. A sandwich in a can? The idea kind of grosses me out.

They’re not available for purchase yet, but you can see the website here. It says there will be two flavors of peanut butter and jelly, along with BBQ chicken, which alarms me. At least peanut butter and jelly are shelf-stable ingredients in their own right. Chicken, not so much.

I have to say, though, that if this product does hit the shelves, I might find myself buying one just to see what it tastes like. I can only imagine.

What do you think about the Candwich?

Sweet Summer Treat

delish!

When our family cuts into a watermelon, there always seem to be a few cupfuls leftover. We eat and eat and eat and somehow we don’t quite make it through the entire melon.

If you also have this problem, I came across the perfect recipe: a refreshing and simple watermelon granita that is as easy as it is delicious. (Note: you can also add a splash of vodka to the mixture before freezing for a nice... READ MORE

Bake Those Vegetables!

A great summer side dish

Summer vegetable season. Yum.

The newest issue of Food & Wine arrived here yesterday. One of the recipes caught my sister’s eye, so for dinner today we tried it.

It’s a keeper. Simple but delicious, and uses vegetables (okay, technically squash and fruit) that are abundant and cheap during the summer months. We tweaked the recipe a little and enjoyed it greatly.

Here it is:

Summer Vegetable Casserole... READ MORE

Fresh Produce

Do you buy local?

This afternoon I loaded up the crew and we drove out into the country. A friend of mine has a blueberry patch on her farm and the boys and I went out to pick a few gallons.

We had a wonderful time, picking berries and enjoying the weather (in the 80s today!).

When we got home, my husband was walking in the door at the same time, armed with a basket of peaches. Our countertops are now overflowing with... READ MORE

Stockpiling vs. Hoarding

How fine is the line?

I am a minimalist by nature, so finding groceries on sale, while exciting, doesn’t normally compel me to stock up. Why do I need five bottles of ketchup, even if it’s a really good deal? One or two will do the trick.

Lately, however, I’ve been on a couponing kick. Now that I’m keeping track of grocery store prices, I find myself thinking more about getting the items we use at the best price possible.... READ MORE
