SINGAPORE: Singapore's Defence Ministry (MINDEF) has awarded a S$543 million contract to Singapore Technologies Aerospace (ST Aerospace) to acquire 12 M-346 aircraft and a ground-based training system.

The acquisition is for the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) replacement programme.

According to a statement by MINDEF, the aircraft will be provided by Italian planemaker Alenia Aermacchi, while the training system will be supplied by Boeing.

ST Aerospace will undertake the overall management of the Advanced Jet Trainer replacement programme.

The 12 M-346 aircraft and the ground-based training system, which will be used at the RSAF's fighter pilot training base in Cazaux in France, are expected to be delivered from 2012.

MINDEF stressed that acquiring the M-346 aircraft and the ground-based training system marks a significant milestone in the RSAF's force development.

This would enhance the capabilities and operational readiness of the Singapore Armed Forces.

ST Aerospace is the electronics arm of ST Engineering.

ST Engineering says the contract is not expected to have any material impact on its earnings in the current financial year.
