John Payne Todd was the only surviving child from Dolley Madison’s first marriage.  He was born on February 29th, 1792 and lived a life of frivolity.  He ultimately became known primarily for his reckless gambling, mounting debt and drinking habits.  His actions ultimately bankrupted the Madison’s and forced his mother to sell of the family’s Montpelier estate.  Payne Todd died in January 1852 and is buried at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
