Not Science, But…

How have your pregnancies compared?

As of Monday I was six weeks pregnant. It’ll be months until we find out the sex of our baby but I’ve already predicted the sex: girl.

This is not at all scientific, but here’s my “evidence.” During my pregnancy with Camilla, I got hit with all-consuming nausea at 6 weeks and didn’t feel much better until about 18. With Blaise, I didn’t even figure out I was pregnant until 7 weeks, the nausea was... READ MORE

Fighting Digital Entropy

Do you keep your data organized?

My hard drive almost died last month.

Once I found out the data was safe, I was actually relieved.

My laptop is sporting a brand-new (free! thanks, Apple) hard-drive now, and the old one is stored away, waiting for us to get the data off it at some future point. I’m planning to enlist the help of my geek-proficient brother when he’s home for the holidays.

In the meantime, I’m really enjoying my new... READ MORE

To Be a Good Fledgling

How to help empty-nest parents?

As Lisa writes about sending her son to college, my parents are getting ready to send a kid away to school too.

Except it’s not their first, it’s their last.

My youngest brother, Kelson, leaves at the end of the month to start his freshman year of college in Florida. All of the rest of us have been gone for a while (in my case, a very long while). Mom and Dad are going to be empty-nesters.

Now, my... READ MORE

Sock-foot or Barefoot?

What's your preference?

In summer, I eschew socks.

Occasionally my exercise footwear requires socks, but when the activity ends I immediately sit and rip them off, and my feet and I are both relieved and happy for the resultant breath of fresh air. Other than when exercising, I am completely sock-free during the warmer months.

I mentioned to my husband that I’ve gone at least a week at a time without wearing socks. He looked... READ MORE

On Leaving the Umbrella

How much distrust is too much?

Recently I was shopping in a fabric store and left my purse sitting in the cart while I examined fabric fifteen feet away. It was within eyesight the whole time, but still, a woman warned me to be careful: she’d had hers stolen that way.

I smiled and thanked her, but internally I rolled my eyes. Fabric store clientele seems to consist mainly of elderly ladies and women with children under age two.... READ MORE

Loving Them Both

How do we do it?

We went to my brother’s high school graduation, and there was a pregnant girl in his class.

She must have been close to full-term, because even though she was capped and gowned, you couldn’t miss the reality of her condition.

My sister elbowed me as we watched her walk across the stage. “Look at that. Good for her!”

I agreed. A part of me wanted to find the girl after the ceremony and tell her how... READ MORE

Fighting Bath Fear?

Help!

My formerly bath-loving toddler now hates the bath.

Back in March, he took a tumble in the bath. We were on vacation, it was a bigger tub than usual, and he went under. It was no one’s fault; my husband was sitting right there, but would have needed unrealistically fast reflexes to stop the dive. Accidents happen.

Blaise was only underwater for a second or two. He might have inhaled a teaspoonful,... READ MORE

"Making" Time

Does it work?

Here’s something I’ve noticed: the less I pray, the more impatient I am when I do.

We try to say evening prayers every day, and sometimes during them I get itchy. I can’t sit still, thinking of all the things I have to do before bedtime. I just want prayers to be over so I can get to the stuff that feels more important.

Intellectually, I know it’s ridiculous. I know praying is the most important thing... READ MORE

Unimportant Division

Is there such a thing?

“In nothing is the power of the Dark Lord more clearly shown than in the estrangement that divides all those who still oppose him.”

So says Haldir the elf about the feud between elves and dwarves.

Every time I read The Lord of the Rings, I notice this quotation. How could I fail to do so? I grew up in a home with a Catholic father and a Protestant mother, so disunity among Christians has always been... READ MORE

Help Me Take the Plunge

Know about eating wheat- or dairy-free?

The two times I’ve posted about my sinus problems, commenters have mentioned that a wheat-free dairy-free diet has given sinus relief them or to people they know.

I’m intrigued.

I love bread and other wheat products. I eat cheese and other dairy every day. It would be hard to give them up. But my sinus pain is so bad and so constant that I think I’d be willing to try it if it would help. At the very... READ MORE
