Brittany-Britney-Glee-thumb.jpg"Glee" recorded the second-largest total audience in its history Tuesday (Sept. 28) -- and may have given Britney Spears some bragging rights as well.

The show drew 13.5 million viewers to FOX Tuesday night, and it scored a 5.9 rating among adults 18-49 (the latter figure is an all-time high for the series). In both measures the show improved on its season premiere last week.

That's lovely, and surely making the people at FOX happy today. But after seeing the numbers this morning, it got us to wondering: How did Tuesday's Britney-centric episode stack up against past "Glee" episodes that focused primarily on the music of Madonna and Lady Gaga?

The answer, as you may have gathered from the superlatives in the paragraphs above, is: better. Here's numbers for Tuesday's episode, "Britney/Brittany," compare to last April's "The Power of Madonna" and last May's Gaga-focused "Theatricality":

"Britney/Brittany" (Sept. 28): 13.5 million viewers, 5.9 in adults 18-49
"The Power of Madonna" (April 20): 13 million, 5.3
"Theatricality" (May 25): 11.4 million, 4.8

("Glee's" most-watched episode is "Hell-O," which marked the show's return in April after a four-month hiatus and drew about 13.7 million viewers.)

So do Tuesday's ratings mean Britney Spears is now bigger than Madonna? Well, no, not by themselves anyway. For starters, Spears actually appeared in the episode dedicated to her, something Madonna and Lady Gaga didn't do. Time period, competition and any number of other factors also figure into ratings.

But Britney Spears can say she at least helped "Glee" get bigger ratings than either of her pop-star peers.

fact check - the "Theatricality" episode was NOT centered on Gaga, and only featured 2 songs, where as the other episodes were soley focused on the featured artist.

I know, Gaga fan, Preta doesnt check facts that well. Only two gaga songs.

Plus Britneyc ant be compared to Madonna, one is an older legend at 41, while another is youth legend.

GaGa well is like Ke$hia, will be gone in a few years, because GaGa is not pretty like Britney and Madonna, one might have talent but with GaGa's ugly looks, she will never be sucessful. Just look at privious one hit wonder monsters like Susan Boyle, Jane Child, and that Buterfly Kisses guy.

Well.. isn't it normal that when the artist herself appears on the show after not being in the spotlight for a long time will get you higher ratings? I think it's common sense..

Um ****- Gaga is not a one hit wonder. She has had 6 number hits in less than 2 years. It took Beyonce 6 years to do it. Mariah is the only other one to do it and it took her more than 10 years. I love Britney, but she has only had a handful of number ones. It was a great ep, but to say that Gaga will be gone soon, we are going on 3 years now, a tad longer than 15 minnutes!

"Britney Spears can say she at least helped "Glee" get bigger ratings than either of her pop-star peers."

And let's not forget Britney didn't even need an "American Idol" lead-in to do it.

Madonna and Gaga episodes both had the most watched tv show, American Idol, leading up to it. BRITNEY DID IT ALL ON HER OWN. So to answer your question, yes, Britney is bigger than Madonna and Gaga. Can't wait for Brit's new album!!

Britney rules! Other than that... LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!!!!!!! lol

Britney is a legend.. And OF COURSE she is bigger than Madonna. Britney is the "real" queen of pop. Ratings are here.. Nobody can reach to her level. Britney's episode was the best episode of Glee. Britney rocks.. End of story.

Gaga to be forgotten soon? Nope. I'm a hundred percent gaga will be around for a long time. Gaga may not have Britney's looks but gaga at this point is far more famous than any other artist that has come out in the last 20 years. Gaga has already won a Grammy something that took Britney 6, 7 years. Gaga has 7 back to back number one hits.2 number one hits on the top 100 and five other singles that have all made number one on the pop and dance charts and stayed on the top 5 of the top 100. Which is something that has not been done in under two years since Mariah broke through 20 years ago. Britney barely just got her 3rd number 1 single in her 11 year career. Gaga broke the record for the most mtv music video awards nominations. And took 8 of them. Gaga also stands on her own two feet because she writes and composes all her music, SINGS LIVE, and plays an instrument. Something that Britney does not do AT ALL, she is nothing without the people in the music industry. Gaga also dances (which is the only thing Britney beats her at), and understands how to shock the public just like Madonna. Gaga has the best selling digital single ever in music history. Gaga's monster ball tour will also soon become the longest running tour with nearly all shows selling out like thin air. She has also been named among the top 5 most influential people on time magazine. How many artist can say they have accomplished all this in just under 2 years? NONE! Gaga even has more friends than any living person on facebook and twitter (gaga took Britney's twitter crown away)which really reflects on fan bases. The point is Gaga is the biggest act to come out in 20 years. She is a force to reckon with and she is FAR closer to pop queen status than Britney is.

For the record FOX didn't advertise Britney's appearance at all. Plus, Britney was on for like 10 seconds. As other posters have mentioned I think this is more impressive because there was no Idol lead in and the competition was fiercer than the Madonna and Gaga episodes faced. Viva La Britney!
