Stimulate with Literature

Here’s a great article: “How to Raise Boys Who Read.”

It’s full of common sense, and the crux seems about right to me: “The secret to raising boys who read, I submit, is pretty simple—keep electronic media, especially video games and recreational Internet, under control (that is to say, almost completely absent). Then fill your shelves with good books.”

Read the whole thing here. Especially if you have boys of your own.

What it doesn't look like

Today I was out running errands with baby Isabel. As we ambled through the aisles at Target, Isabel snuggled against my chest in her baby carrier, I noticed a young couple at the other end of the aisle. They looked really young (mid-teens) but as it was a weekday morning, I assumed they were a bit older than they seemed.

At some point, before I moved on from throw pillows to plasticware, the couple... READ MORE

Wisdom of the Child

My toddler sets me straight

This afternoon I was having a momentary freak-out, end-of-day flash of melt that wasn’t pretty. Not at all. It was just one of those split-second flashes where the reality of the situation was greatly overshadowed by my annoyance and also the number of discarded shoes left on the front-room floor. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of life but actually yes totally a very big deal.

Because everyone... READ MORE

Go Ahead and Jump?

The Ups and Downs of Trampolines

We don’t own a trampoline. Years ago, I wrote a newspaper article on the most dangerous toys on the market and trampolines were at the top of the list.

For the story I interviewed an Emergency Room doctor who told me trampoline injuries were the number one cause of broken bones in children. He saw all kinds of jumps-gone-bad in the ER. I decided that day we would never buy a trampoline and I have... READ MORE

Meet My Laundry Buddy

Stephen gets it done

It’s 11 am. Ask me how my laundry’s looking. Go ahead, ask me.

Okay, I’ll tell you how my laundry’s looking ... it’s all caught up! It’s washed, dried, folded, and put away. The clothes are clean, the sheets are clean, the towels are clean, and the bathing suits are clean.

But I can’t take credit for any of it. It’s my new laundry buddy, 9-year-old Stephen, who keeps me on track. I’m barely out of... READ MORE

Reptile, Sand and Sea

I can’t resist sharing this photo from our family trip to the ocean last week.

Other kids swam, collected shells, and hunted crabs and baby lobsters. But on this particular day, 14-year-old Eamon was single-minded. He was creating a sea turtle.

Life lately has felt a bit overwhelming, with various home projects, work projects, and the rush to prepare for a new school year. But when I look at this photo, I am reminded to give thanks to God for simple pleasures, for days at the beach, for the sound of the waves, for 14-year-old boys, and the simplicity of sand.

Pretty… Boys?

When dress-up goes weird

A college friend of mine came from a family of six girls followed by two boys.

She told me a story of a time her father came home and his son tripped into the room to meet him. He’d been playing dress-up with his sisters, and he was decked out in a skirt, heels, and jewelry: the whole dress-up package.

Apparently this kind of dress-up was a common occurrence in their home (with six girls, of course... READ MORE

No One Beat Me Up

Sharing childhood fun
My siblings and me a decade ago

“If I had to use two words to describe my childhood,” my sister said the other day, “they would be: pink belly.”

I was unloading the dishwasher and almost dropped a handful of forks. What?!? Pink belly? What was she talking about?

Apparently, “pink belly” is a game wherein the perpetrators hold down the victim and smack him on the belly until it turns pink.

I am the oldest of six children, and Tirienne... READ MORE

Bath Time Is Such A Battle

Behold the scene that greeted me on the way to the shower recently.

If I had a better lens, you could see that the entire periphery of the bathtub was lined with Lego armies.

There were ships in the actual tub, and a couple of spies staging a raid from behind the shampoo bottle.

At least it’s better than the Playmobil knights dueling in the creche last Christmas.

(Love my boys!)
