With Sergio Pérez having been confirmed as a Sauber Formula 1 driver on Monday, Addax GP2 team-mate Giedo van der Garde continues to search for an F1 seat, with the latest development being that two ‘concrete’ offers are now on the table.
2007 marked the last time a Dutchman raced in F1, with Christijan Albers’ Spyker career having come to a dismal end when replaced by first Marcus Winkelhock and then Sakon Yamamoto after the British Grand Prix.
All in the van der Garde camp remain positive, however, that the triple GP2 race winner could be on next year’s Formula 1 grid.
“We have concrete offers from two teams,” Jan Paul ten Hoopen, Manager to the 25-year-old from Utrecht, explained to Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad. “In fact, we have a team with whom we can sign, but we need to first get a partner together for a sufficient budget.”
Ten Hoopen went on to add that current possibilities are Lotus, Virgin Racing, Williams and Force India, but stressed that Hispania is no option. “We are trying for the best possible team, not just looking at how things are now but also the perspectives for 2011 - that's a tricky balance,” he explained.
However, he added that no hazardous deals will be submitted. “There’s no sense in putting down a lot of money for a seat for one year and then killing off Giedo’s career,” ten Hoopen continued. “There’s lots of examples of that and obviously we don’t want to be one.
“I hope we’re able to achieve some clarity by Abu Dhabi because that’s our deadline.”
