Karen Owen

A Duke student's risque PowerPoint has firmly implanted itself in the annals of legendary internet stories for generations to come.

Karen F. Owen, a 2010 Duke grad, composed an in-depth, thesis-like document titled "An Education Beyond The Classroom: Excelling In The Realm Of Horizontal Academics," in May. In the report, she describes the men she's slept with in near-scientific detail and even provides charts ranking their sexual prowess. She sent the show to a few friends after she wrote it and, from there, it went into a forward frenzy, ending up on fraternity listservs and making its way to the media.

Owen told Jezebel that she never meant for the show to go viral; since it has been posted she has gone into virtual hiding.

Some Duke students are less than pleased by the report's infamy. In a letter to the Duke Chronicle, Alyssa Granacki wrote,

"...the overall glorification of Karen Owen's PowerPoint and the implied sentiment that it was an act of sexual liberation equates "shattering the glass ceiling" with humiliating members of the opposite sex. Why should we congratulate Karen Owen for subjecting men to the objectification, embarrassment and harassment that women have fought against for years?"

Legal blog Above the Law questions whether or not Owen will be subject to lawsuits based on the number of incriminating details revealed in the PowerPoint, comparing Owen's situation to that of blogger Jessica Culter, who detailed her exploits on the blog Washingtonienne -- and was sued by one of her paramours.

See Owen's work in full on Jezebel.

she should have left out the names and pictures...we probably wouldn't even be discussing this right now.

The bottom line is the men are lucky they got in and got out, 'cuz this one has a mean streak it takes PowerPoint to detail.

I shudder to think of a couple years of marriage to that kind of spite...

if her "victims" whom she is belittling are readily identifiable, then I consider this as bad and abominable as the two Rutgers students who "outed" the one's gay roommate by publicly posting his sex film they took.

I have no problem with her enjoying sex, but wow! What a vapid snob. A perfect representation of what the rest of the world sees as 'American' - crass and tasteless. Even if written as a joke for her friends only - her personality certainly comes shining through. yikes

Don't I wish this woman walked the Sarah B. Duke Gardens forty years ago. Why IS youth wasted on the young?

Why all this faux puritanism? The work is funny. If Ms Owen didn't want this to circulate outside her group of "friends," she should have had a few copies made up at Kinko, with enough extra to send to agents.

My wife did something similar, on a lesser scale, evaluating the ASSets of the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox, complete with a rating system, charts, and graphs, developed through observation rather than direct participation; she got her start years back, sitting behind Ellis Burke, in the center-field bleachers.

We might also remember that the anthropologiste does fudge the experience by being present as an observer. In this case, with apologies to Jimmy Durante, I think every one of us "wants to get into the act."

Donna Rice as the arbiter of morality?? Funny...

She is lucky some drunk guys were desperate enough to dip their weiners into that gonzo nosed pile of useless. What a lame chick. I give this stupid story a 3 for girth and a 1.5 for length.
Halloween Baby   35 minutes ago (5:06 PM)
Those are your measurements, right?
Frank Brenner   21 minutes ago (5:21 PM)
Not on a cold day...I'm a shrinker.

I was just thinking the same thing. Drill a hole in a tree and a frat guy will blank it.

She's not exactly "photogenic"

I'm glad to see there is no double-standard here and her actions are being frowned on just as if a man had done this.

What I don't understand is how such a thing goes viral. If I had something like this forwarded to me I'd just say "that's disgusting" and delete it. It took a lot of immature people to bring this the attention it now has.
DavidPun   1 hour ago (4:33 PM)
They are called "sudents".
Susan Shaffer   50 minutes ago (4:51 PM)
and those who clicked through to read it in its entirety. but that was just for research purposes
therealone   27 minutes ago (5:14 PM)
They're also called "The Today Show".
Leadsled   47 minutes ago (4:54 PM)
Well you might say "that's disgusting" I am actually after reading this article quite curious about what that type of woman thinks about the objective and subjective experience of sex. So I actually intend to look this powerpoint up now. I don;t believe myself to be immature and I find your intolerance towards those with either greater curiosity, humor or sexual openness than yourself by labeling us automatically "immature" due to not ftting your precise standards quite inappropriate, unfair and uncalled for.

And if you think this is "no double standard" because she is getting some mild criticism then you really are off the reservation. She is getting mildly rebuked for objectifying men, as if that was problematic (I am sorry whatever sex we find sexually attractive we will of course objectify. This is as true if you are a straight woman as a gay man as a striaght man as a gay woman as a bisexual transgendered person. Anyone healthily in touch with their own sexuality and instinctual drives understands that a degree of objectification of one's sex objects is not problematic and so long as the other person is also treating the even as sex for sex's sake rather than some grand romantic affair there is no harm in objectification. I WANT to be objectified by women who sleep with me when we arent serious or into a relationship.
MarcEdward   41 minutes ago (5:00 PM)
She's not being criticized for objectifying men, she's being criticized for violating basic ideas of privacy. Telling intimate details and tying people's faces to them is wrong.
She was obviously very badly raised.
therealone   25 minutes ago (5:16 PM)
Well, I might say, this proves the students at Duke University have a LOT of time on their hands. I know community colleges that keep students busier.
DavidPun   1 hour ago (4:29 PM)
Way to go girl. You can bet thet every hypocrite who is condemning you only knew about this because they were busy surfing the web looking for this type of stuff on the Internet. As for the media...boy they are loving every minute of this. If you offered to appear on CNN, I can guarantee there will be a major punch-up in the cafeteria by the news anchors fighting over whose show you get on. I suspect the only people who are really upset by this are your parents and family. They are ones you should apologize to and not the rest of us #$%^ out there.
theatheo   41 minutes ago (5:00 PM)
Did you just call yourself a dirty word?
DavidPun   15 minutes ago (5:26 PM)
Yup. I'm just as bad all the rest, so I will not try to condemn this girl.

how long will it take all these young people, who grew up with the information age, for pete's sake, to figure out that absolutely anything can go viral. they should know a lot better, easy access to just about any kind of information has been available for most of these kids' lives.
Traynor   21 minutes ago (5:21 PM)
Just to clarify: she is NOT a 7th grader. She is an adult college student and should be fully aware of the potential for anything put in electronic format to go viral. To assume she did not is to sell her short-- assuming she had to pass entrance exams to get into Duke. She knew what she was doing and did it anyway. Let the chips fall where they may
