U2 set to headline Glastonbury 2011?

By Chris Coplan on October 4th, 2010 in Festival News/Rumor, News

While we’re always aiming to bring you some good news, we  occasionally have to be the bearers of bad news; this time, however, it’s two healthy scoops of disappointment. Not only are tickets to the 2011 Glastonbury Music Festival sold out, but those who lost out will likely be missing U2 as a headlining act. Double bummer.

In a message posted on the band’s official site prior to Glastonbury’s Sunday ticket on sale, the Irish rock band noted that Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis has said he’d like U2 to play in 2011 before pointing out the convenient gap in their tour schedule just before their scheduled show in East Lansing, Michigan on June 26th. (Glasto 2011 is set to take place from June 22-26 in Pilton, UK.) However, the band stopped shorting of confirming their attendance, noting only “We’re certainly excited about our plans for next year. Watch this space!” Of course we are.

U2 were set to headline Glastonbury 2010 before frontman Bono injured his back and forced the band to cancel. There’s no word on when next year’s Glastonbury lineup will be announced, but other rumored acts include Radiohead, Madonna, Eminem, and Coldplay.

Non-Glastonbury attendees can find the rest of U2’s upcoming itinerary below, complete with the newly announced openers.

  • What a convenient Bonnaroo sized gap in June. I could see it.

    • Wow I sure hope not. They’re the most annoying band alive and their addition to Bonnaroo would certainly mean a handful a way more exciting bands could not be afforded.

      • U2 Playing at Bonnaroo would be amazing. I am doubting you have ever seen U2 live before, Mistaglitch, and are simply hopping on the I-hate-U2-and-Bono-for-no-good-reason bandwagon. The truth is, that bandwagon is over-played and lame now. U2 would absoultely destroy Bonnaroo… in the best way possible.

        • Andy, I’ve seen them at Madison Square Garden if that counts. They put on a great show. I would never plan to see them again and I do think Bono is a douche who preaches much harder than he could ever practice. Him and his cronies kicked Muse of stage here in Atlanta because they were stealing the show…Fuck U2 and you too.

          • Well, I stand corrected. It appears you have seen them. And Bono does do a lot of preaching, but I’d dare to say he has accomplished so much more in his humanitarian efforts than you or any others on the aforementioned bandwagon will ever give him credit for. You certainly are a clever one, though, with your wordplay.

And I’m sure that you’re correct in that U2 kicked Muse off the stage for stealing the show… I mean, that’s what bands do: kick their openers off stage for stealing the show (and then go on to play one of their own songs with said opening band at major music festivals). I’m not surprised.
So aside from this theory, Bigfoot, and 9/11 being an inside job, what else do you believe?
